She promised she’d be back soon.

I pray she did because she was the one true friend I had here.

Aside from that heartbreak, there were more problems smothering me. Jace, for example. He’d been blowing my cell up nonstop, apologizing and stating we needed to talk. He’d sent me several long paragraphs expressing the same bullshit. How sorry he was. How I needed to focus on the bigger picture. Maybe I was being petty, but I didn’t give a fuck. I had no interest in talking to him or Ginger right now.

I needed space.

Time.

I was still trying to wrap my head around everything.

As far as the thing with Ginger…yes, I wanted to help. But to be frank, I didn’t know how I could help her.

I’d thought about it for days now and the truth was, the situation was out of my hands. Jace said they had a plan. I didn’t know what it was, probably because I was too busy bashing his face in when he was trying to explain it to me outside the pizzeria.

Whatever it was, they’d have to figure out how to do it without me. I couldn’t take the risk of intervening just for Damien to catch me. Ginger’s life wasn’t the only one on the line here.

Despite how much I loathed them right now, I still had faith in them.

They could do it. They had Finn on their sides, too, and whoever else they could round up to take the heat.

Me? I had to stay here and protect the women at the academy. I refused to let what happened to Sky happen to someone else.

I hadn’t heard a word from Rhett or any of the Ravagers since that night. I’d been expecting some type of confrontation by now over my involvement with the Outlaw. Since it never happened, I only figured Rhett didn’t tell the others.

I needed to talk to him. To warn him that this was only the beginning. He was theinI needed to get closer to the Ravagers.

But in order for this to work, I had to get my cover story straight.

If he or any of the Ravagers discovered my secret, I’d be done for. They’d kill me.

Then again, now that I knew the truth, I’d rather die by their hand than suffer what Damien had in store for me.

On Friday, I’d finally gained the courage to approach them. Well, not them exactly, but Rhett. As far as I knew, he was the only one who knew what really happened that night. I had to figure out a way to get him alone without the others interfering.

I was on a quest for revenge and Rhett was my ticket there.

Problem was, I hadn’t seen him today, or any of the Ravagers. I searched for Rhett between classes, having memorized when he’d usually pop up. They weren’t in the dining hall for lunch either, meaning they had to be in their dorm room.

It was foolish and a terrible risk.

But it was one I had to take.

I made my way across campus and pressed the button for the third floor when I stepped inside the elevator. As the contraption beamed me up, my hands began to sweat.

I was nervous, already having contemplated my decision before I’d ever made it to their door. I had to do this though.

When I reached the door, I knocked three times.

A startling wave of relief washed over me when Rhett opened the door.

“Samara…” His brows crinkled as he took me in. “Uh, what are you doing here?”

“I need to talk to you. Can you get away?”

“Um…” He bit his lip, glancing over his shoulder. “Give me a minute.”

After waiting a bit, I crept back over to the elevator, impatiently waiting for it to open since I’d assumed Rhett wasn’t coming.
