I finished my last squat and growled deeply as I rose to my full height, panting hard. As the song ended, I took my headphones off my ears. Screams ripped through the air, catching my attention.

“Oh my GOD! She’s dead. She’s fucking dead!”

“Shut the fuck up,” a familiar voice shouted.

I jerked my head fast out the window, taking in Kinsley soaked head to toe, her chest heaving as she glared down at the pool. Gretchen and Janice were with her. They both took off running out the exit just as I approached the glass, banging my fist against it.

Kinsley froze then and arched her head in my direction. Her eyes grew wide. Slowly, she backed away, fleeing like a bat out of fucking hell.

What the fuck was going on out there?

Quickly I grabbed my towel and wiped my hands off before opening the door, stepping out towards the pool. There was a random backpack on the floor. I went to study it, opening it briefly to find Samara’s name jotted down inside the spine of a schoolbook.

My heartbeat stammered as I approached the pool, glancing down in the water. There was a body lying at the bottom of the pool.

I took a step back, my breath stuttering hard in my chest once I realized who it was.

Samara.

Before I’d realized what I was doing, I dove in, swimming down to the bottom, grabbing her weightless arm as it drifted up above her body. With a feral scream underwater, I jerked her toward me, holding onto her tight. I swam up to the top, dragging her lifeless body against me as I swam to the edge of the pool.

“SAMARA!”

I lifted her body first and gently rolled her out of the pool, onto the cold floor. I pushed myself up and as I knelt to her side, my head dove down to her mouth.

She wasn’t breathing.

She was fucking dead.

“FUCK!”

My hands shook as I stared down at her lifeless body. The blue shading coated over her lips.

Something within me shifted then. It was a pain I hadn’t felt since I was a little kid.

Save her. You couldn’t do it back then, but you can now!

My hands met her chest, pumping down hard several times before my mouth met hers, my fingers enclosed over her nose. I breathed into her several times, repeating the process, cursing at the top of my fucking lungs when it didn’t work.

“Breathe, Samara. FUCKING BREATHE!”

This wasn’t how I wanted this to go. I wanted her gone, yes, but not like this. I only wanted her to leave the academy and go back wherever she came from.

I didn’t want her to fucking die!

Please, Samara, breathe for me.

I started compressions again, breathing deep and hard into her mouth, repeating it over and over again, tears forming in my eyes.

“FUCKING BREATHE!”

I pounded my fists down hard against her fragile chest. Her eyes shot open, and her body lunged forward as she coughed, puking up the water trapped inside her lungs.

Her body shook as she stared up at me cradling her in my arms. I blew out a hard breath of relief, holding her close.

“Phantom,” she rasped out, her weak hand shaking as she reached up to touch my face. “Can-Can I…”

“Yes,” I whispered, my tears falling down on her face.
