“Your ten seconds was up before your balls dropped.”

Father put his gun away, then stepped over Vicki’s body, approaching me.

“Congratulations, Son, you’re officially a man now.”

He gripped my shoulders, squeezing me tight.

“Do your old man a favor and clean this shit up. When you’re done, come find me. We have much to discuss, Son.”

He turned away from me, pleasantly humming to himself as he stepped out the room, closing the door behind him.

I broke, crying out as I dashed over to Vicki, cradling her head in my lap.

I’m sorry.

I’m sorry.

God…

What the fuck have I done?!

Chapter 39

Rhett

Isankdowninthe recliner in the family basement and propped my feet up, guzzling down a fresh glass of whiskey while Isaac helped himself to a bottle of bourbon. Phantom was currently at the academy meeting up with the vendor delivering all the booze for tonight’s party, so it was left up to us to discuss the new candidates for the trials without him.

So far, we’d yet to hear back from Griffin about the drugs. It was possible our pal Sharkey had already moved everything we had stowed away, but I prayed that wasn’t the case. We needed that money. With any luck, no news meant good news.

Isaac’s gaze slid to the basement door as it opened. I glanced over my shoulder to see Father had arrived.

“Boys,” he greeted us, a troubled look on his face as he eyed over me and Isaac. “Where’s your brother?”

“At the academy,” I replied as I hopped to my feet, finishing my drink off. “There’s a party at the clearing tonight. He’s meeting with the vendor.”

Father nodded. “Very well. We have a lot to discuss so I suggest we get started. Isaac, my boy, pour me a drink.”

I stepped to the side and offered Father my seat. He sank down, groaning a bit. Isaac passed over his drink and wordlessly we watched as he gulped the whole glass down, a sigh slipping past his wet lips.

He looked like shit. His dark hair was messy. Black rings rimmed around his blue eyes. He hadn’t been sleeping. I imagine all the stress must’ve been getting to him.

“How are things at the academy? Any more surprises I should know about?”

“None,” I answered, though it was technically a lie. He still didn’t know about Samara’s involvement with the Outlaw, but soon he would. He seemed to be in a reasonable mood despite it all, so maybe I’d get lucky and manage to avoid a verbal beatdown for withholding this information from him.

“We’ve doubled down on the guards,” inserted Isaac, who tipped back his bottle of bourbon, scrunching his face as he swallowed. “They seem to be helping. Headmaster Higgins wants to initiate an earlier curfew for the students. He seeks your approval.”

Father bobbed his head. “Yes, I approve. Set the curfew for 8PM during the weekdays and 9PM during the weekends, effective immediately. This counts for all students, including those who choose to leave the academy on the weekends. If they aren’t back by curfew, they aren’t allowed on the grounds. Understood?”

Isaac and I agreed.

“Phantom said he completed the list of trial candidates. Do you have it?”

“I do.” I reached in my back pocket, fetching the freshly updated list I’d printed off Phantom’s computer. Isaac and I shared a nervous look when he took it from me and began eyeing it over.

Father said nothing for a long moment, giving a comforting nod every other second. Then as his eyes narrowed down on the last name on the list, something weird happened.

His face became metallically hard.
