His jaw muscle sporadically thrummed the longer he gawked athername.

“And this is the best you could come up with?” Father’s dark eyes slid away from the page to roll between me and Isaac. “Question for you two. Why is Samara Campbell the only female on the list? Out of eleven names, only one of them is a girl. Why is that? Thereshouldbe an even number of candidates for both genders.”

“We’re starting off light,” Isaac spoke firmly. “It was Phantom’s idea. We couldn’t parade around campus jumping from student to student spilling all the beans, now, could we?”

“No,” Father reluctantly agreed, “that, I understand. The male recruits are fine. We can work with it. But why just the one girl?”

“The females there are weak,” I replied simply. “All they care about is their hair, makeup, and jumping from dick to dick at parties. They aren’t Ravager material.”

“But yetthisgirl is?” he asked, raising the page up. “What makesSamara Campbelldifferent from the others?”

The way he said her name with ruthless disdain made me shiver. As I turned to look at Isaac, he nodded, his face blank.

Fuck.

Here came the verbal beatdown I was hoping to elude.

“Samara is special because she was there on the night Sky Parker was attacked. I lied to you, Father. Ididkill the Outlaw, but Ididn’tsave Sky. Samara did.”

“Explain yourself right this instance!” he spat at me, his hands shaking, crumpling the list.

“It’s a long story,” I sighed out.

“Then fucking shorten it!”

“Samara stopped by the dorm to see Phantom. He kicked her out and I went after her to see what she wanted. That’s when I ran into Sky. She told me Samara saved her and that she was fighting the guy all on her own. I went to help. I found her brawling with the guy.”

I swallowed, breathing out hard before continuing. The last thing I wanted was to disappoint my father.

“I didn’t jump in right away. I just hid behind a tree and watched. She was phenomenal, Dad. She fought her fucking heart out and would’ve won if I hadn’t distracted her. I mean, the guy pulled a blade on her, and she didn’t even flinch.”

“Which means she’s been well trained in self-defense,” Isaac threw in for extra security.

“I see.” Father ground his teeth for a long moment as he took it all in. “Fine. If what you’re telling me is true, then yes, she qualifies. If you’re gathering the new recruits tonight, then I suggest you gather more women too. It doesn’t matter who, just fucking do it. Samara willnotact in the trials alone. Am I making myself clear?”

“Crystal,” Isaac grinned.

“Yes, Sir.”

Father gave me the crumpled list back, sneering as he jumped up to pour himself another drink.

“Now, about this so-called Harvest coming up.”

He paused and took a sip of his newly poured drink, adding more before he moved back to the recliner.

“You three arenotto get involved. We’ve agreed to Jace’s terms, but thelastthing I want to do is throw my sons out there knowing you may not make it back alive. This isserious shit, boys, and I’m sorry, but you’re not ready. Sharkey and Prim will be taking your places.”

“But that won’t be enough,” I urgently protested. “The two of them won’t be able to—”

“I assure you they won’t be alone,” Father replied. His tone was smug, proud almost. Suddenly I had the impression there was something we didn’t know. Like Father had some type of wild card up his sleeve he hadn’t revealed to us.

That was it.

It had to be.

He was hiding something from us.

“What aren’t you telling us?” I had to ask, unable to keep it to myself. “Who else is gonna be there?”
