Three hours later, Rex came into the room to trade places. She took a pillow from the bed and went to lie down at the back of the bedroom. Rex didn’t comment, just sat down on the bed and waited.

Nova was woken up by a loud banging sound.

She heard Elizabeth jump off the bed and run to answer the door.

A woman’s voice carried to the bedroom, talking a million kilometers an hour.

Nova got up from her sleeping spot on the floor and saw that Altair was asleep on the floor and Rex on the bed. She walked into the living room.

“Thank you,” Elizabeth said. “We’ll go right now.”

She closed the door and turned to face Nova.

“It’s always like this. One thing goes wrong and the rest follows. There’s a problem in Glaerus,” she said. “Rex and I have to go.”

“You’re leaving me alone with him?”

“I have no choice.”

Rex and Elizabeth got ready quickly. Half an hour later, they were out the door with Elizabeth yelling at her, “Whatever you do, don’t untie him.”

She went back to the bedroom, unsure what to do now.

“What are you going to do now, Nova?” Altair asked. “People are going to come looking for me.”

“I think they’ll survive without you for one day.”

She sat on the bed.

“Today is the day of the trial for the new rebels they caught. Everyone will be there, and they’ll be expecting me.”

Nova bit her lip. She suspected people would be more glad than disappointed when Altair didn’t show up. Though he was right that they may wonder where he is.

“Do you know any of those rebels?” he asked. “Did you use to meet up with them and plan against me?”

A look of sudden realization appeared on his face.

“Mak!” he said. “You weren’t meeting as lovers, you were having rebel meetings.”

She looked down at the ground, not wanting to give anything away.

“I don’t know if I’m relieved or mad,” he said. “I really hate that guy. It was eating me up that you liked him.”

“I don’t,” she said. “You were right, he’s—”

A sudden thought hit her.

“What did you mean when you said everybody will be at the trial?” she asked.

Altair shrugged. “The council will be there. And the Mudden military.”

“And you.”

Altair raised his hands showing her the rope around them. “Not me.”

“No, but Mak doesn’t know that.” She jumped up from the bed. “What about the public?”

“People are allowed to come and watch but nobody ever does. They’re too scared their interest could be misinterpreted.”
