“Altair, we have a problem.”

She looked at him earnestly.

“Worse than me being tied up to Rex’s bed?”

“About a week ago, a rebel came to see me. She was scared. She said Mak wanted to blow up everyone, the council, you, and the Mudden military.”

“Was she standing outside your bedroom window?”

“Yes,” Nova said. “You saw us? I thought I heard a noise but I wasn’t sure.”

“Yes, but I couldn’t hear what she said. You think Mak will blow up the trial?”

“If he was serious, this would be the time to do it. Hit everyone at once.”

“Nova,” he said, struggling to stand up and pulling on his restraints. “We have to stop him.”

“How?”

Altair looked her directly in the eyes. “Let me go.”

Nova hesitated. Maybe she could stop Mak on her own. “Where is the trial taking place?”

“The jail.”

He didn’t break eye contact with her.

If she went alone, she could warn a guard or a Mudden military man. But would they believe her? Besides, she’d have to explain how she knew. And if she was wrong, she’d be accusing Mak of being a rebel and giving herself away as well.

“I have two conditions,” she said. “First, we don’t tell anyone about our suspicions and find Mak on our own. I don’t want anyone to accuse me of being a rebel.”

Altair nodded. “I agree. I doubt they would take us seriously anyway.”

“Second, you let me tie you back up afterward.”

“No.” There was no hesitation in his voice.

“Then I won’t let you go.”

“And people will die.”

“Shit, Altair. Just promise.”

He shook his head.

“I promise to protect you. I meant what I said yesterday, Nova, I won’t let anyone take you away from me. Not my family, not Mak, and certainly not Elizabeth.”

A shudder ran down her back. What if Altair stopped her from leaving Mudden?

One problem at a time.

“Then promise you won’t accuse Elizabeth and Rex of being rebels either.”

“Fine,” he agreed. “I won’t report them because that would put you in danger too, but I’m not going to follow along with whatever they have planned for me. I won’t be their prisoner.”

That was good enough for her.

She ran to the kitchen and found a knife to cut through the rope.
