“What’s that?” Aksel asks.

Blaze and I are watching the interaction. If Aksel shuts him down, I’m going to say something.

“Well, there was another scent in that house.”

There was? I wonder what it’s like to have a shifter nose. Not that I would give up being a demon, but it does seem like a useful talent. It’s been vital in this case so far.

I haven’t had to seduce anyone yet.

Blaze nods. “He’s right. It was a vampire.”

“Well, that’s interesting,” I say. We are hunting a vampire, and there was one recently in their home? Are they hiding him?

But why would they? They made it seem like he was their enemy.

“It was a female,” Blaze adds that helpful detail.

“Ah,” I say. So it’s not our culprit. But still, who is she?

“Her scent was delectable.” Felix has a dreamy smile on his face. Is he in love with a smell?

I’m about to make fun of him, but Aksel speaks first.

“That may be the only lead we have. We can at least investigate it and rule her out as a dead end.”

“Are we tracking her by scent again?” Blaze asks.

He sounds more interested in this than usual. Did her scent intrigue him too?

“I think that’s the only option,” Aksel answers.

“Do you like being bloodhounds?” I ask, smirking at Blaze and Felix.

They both glare at me, and Felix rolls his eyes.

After a night spent in a hotel, we have to return to Nicoli’s pack’s house to catch her scent again. Then, we follow Felix and Blaze as her scent takes us on a merry chase. It’s like she went all over campus before going home.

We walk miles before realizing she lives a block away from where we started.

According to Felix, her scent is strong around this building. We set up camp across from the building, waiting to set eyes on the vampire for the first time.

I sprawl across the back seat, getting comfortable. Who knows how long this might take.

“Can we put some music on?” Felix asks.

It’s a good idea, but of course, Aksel turns him down.

“No. We must remain alert. That means no distractions.”

I open my phone, scroll through to the rap section, Aksel’s least favorite, and pick a song at random.

“Turn that off!” He practically growls.

The dark fae is as tired as the rest of us, so his patience is wearing thin. I love it. A small amount of his black magic seeps from him into the car before he reins it in.

Blaze turns around in the front seat, snagging my phone out of my hand and shutting the music off. We didn’t even get to the chorus.
