“Why wouldn’t you tell me? I wouldn’t have brought you here today!”

His response is cut off by the sound of footsteps approaching our table. We both relax, pretending we weren’t just fighting.

“Okay, here is your food.” She places it in front of us randomly but guesses correctly. “I’ll be right back with silverware.”

She doesn’t look at Griffyn.

“She doesn’t like you much,” I point out.

“I doubt she’s comfortable around other supernaturals if she’s actually involved in this case,” He answers defensibly.

The door bursts open. It’s hard to see the details of the small figure with the sun shining behind them until they step inside. It’s just another college student, but it distracts me enough that I don’t realize Anna is dropping off the silverware.

I swing back around in my seat, knocking Anna over in the process.

Griffyn is up and out of his seat in a second, trying to help her while she waves him off, but I’m frozen.

I am unable to breathe as shock wraps it’s icy fingers around my throat.

She’s my mate. My fated mate. The one person on this earth created just for me and she’s a vampire. She’s not a dark fae.

Which means only one thing. My dad will kill her if he knows. He would never let his line be sullied by cross-breeding. He would kill the one person who just became irreplaceable to me.

Which means she can never know. I can never act on it. I can’t tell anyone. There is no one I trust with this knowledge, not even my own damn team. It’s too important. Vampires discover their mates by drinking their blood. It’s not the simplest, considering I identified her with only a touch, just like how an incubus needs to feed off their mate’s sexual desire to find theirs.

And she can’t like me. She can’t give in to the draw she will feel towards her fated mate. If we didn’t need her for this case, I would disappear right now. I don’t want to, but it’s better if she’s as far away from me as possible.

“Are you going to apologize?” Griffyn asks, glaring at me as he helps her get steady on her feet.

“No,” Is my only response.

She dismisses me, leaving both of us behind with our food.

“What the hell, man? Do you want her to hate you, or do you want her help?” Griffyn is glaring at me with his hands fisted on the table.

He looks like he wants to take a swing at me. Interesting.

I ignore his question. Instead, I pick at my salad and pretend like my life didn’t just get flipped on its axis. Griffyn’s burger looks more appealing. I should have known better, considering it’s bar food.

We sit there, pretending to make small talk as we watch her interactions with the other customers. When she talks to a male, I want to gut them but continuously remind myself I can’t.

“We aren’t learning anything from this,” Griffyn points out, “It’s not like she’s going to talk to humans about this. We should just ask her some questions and leave her alone.”

At this point, he’s right. It’s more dangerous to stick around her now that I know she’s my mate. I’m only so fucking strong, and she’s a perfect work of art.

“Let’s reconvene with the others and approach her together. We need all our senses engaged if we are going to interrogate her. We only have one chance before she runs off to tell Nicoli and his mate about us.”

I leave two hundred dollars on the table, a more than generous tip. Griffyn raises his eyebrows but doesn’t comment. I only offer him a shrug in response.

We exit, and I resist the urge to look back at her. Griffyn doesn’t.

Anna

The sexy stranger, Griffyn, came back only to pretend like he wasn’t just offering me his blood last night. . I played along, finding no need to embarrass myself. He brought another extremely attractive guy with him, who I’m assuming is also supernatural. The friend had heterochromatic eyes; one was brown and the other ice blue. His tawny hair was longer on top and shorter on the sides. Gorgeous, but his personality could use some damn work.

I was just trying to drop the silverware off and sneak away without engaging with them, but I got too close to the friend. He knocked me on my ass and then didn’t even apologize.
