Two supernaturals coming into town is suspicious. Finding my bar, which is not a tourist attraction, raises red flags. I can’t afford to put off telling Aly and her mates. What if they’re in danger? I should have told them as soon as Griffyn cornered me last night.

I don’t even know how to tell them, though. I can’t just walk into their apartment like, “Hey, guys! Some supernatural guys showed up at my job. Oh, by the way, I work at a bar because I never finished my degree, and I’ve been lying to all of you. Whoops!” That probably wouldn’t go over well. I could just tell them that I was hanging out at the bar. It wouldn’t technically be a lie, just an omission of truth. The clock strikes four, indicating my shift is over. It was incredibly slow since it was a midday shift. I’m grateful for that because I was extremely distracted even after those two left.

I run home to shower and change in case I reek of alcohol. Day drinking would not inspire confidence in my friends.

I shoot Aly a quick text.

Anna:Are you home? Could I swing by to chat really quick?

She replies almost immediately.

Aly:Yup. Come on over!

I could just show up, but I’ve learned the hard way that a best friend just shouldn’t see some of the things that happen in that house.

I head out the front door, half jogging, half walking to Aly’s house.

The door swings open before I even veer off the sidewalk.

“What’s going on, Anna?” Aly is standing there in a power pose, ready to take on whatever the issue is.

I need that energy right now.

“Let’s talk inside,” I answer.

She steps aside, and I head right past her and plop down on the couch. All the guys gathered around, watching me. Their concern makes me feel silly. It’s not like anything has happened.

“I’m sure it’s nothing,” I say, standing up and intending to leave.

Aly presses me back down with a firm hand on my shoulder. “Just tell us, and we can decide together if it’s nothing.”

I take a deep breath before blurting, “There are new supernaturals here.”

They all share a look, but they don’t look surprised. What the hell?

“A group of four imposing males?” Aly asks softly.

Four? “I’ve only seen two.”

“What were they?” Ajax asks kindly.

I pause. “How should I know?”

The guys all look at me strangely before an expression of guilt replaces it. Kiran and Ajax look away while Jay busies himself. Nic and Jeremy continue staring at me.

“You have a natural ability like any supernatural to discern what another is. Only a really powerful being is able to mask it like Ryan did,” Nic tells me.

“Okay, we’ll circle back to that, and you’ll explain how. For now, what about these guys? Should we be worried? Are they dangerous?” I ask.

Aly steps closer, joining me on the couch and grabbing my hand. She’s looking down as she says, “We should have told you, but we didn’t realize they would stick around. They were asking about Ryan, and I didn’t want to bring that asshole up unless I had to. I’m sorry, Anna, but we knew they were here.”

I don’t respond. They knew but didn’t tell me? Is it that obvious that I’m vulnerable over Ryan? I’ve tried to maintain my indifferent attitude around them, but Nic and Aly have expressed concern. Something must have snuck through.

“Why are they sticking around, and what are they doing around Anna?” Jay asks.

“Good question. Where did you see them?” Nic is pacing, trying to figure this out.

“At a bar,” I answer simply.
