“Great! Let’s go!” I practically hop out the door.

We wait by her car outside the bar. It’s a little too serial killer for me, but I was outvoted. We don’t want to let her know we’re here before we get a chance to ask our questions.

An hour passes before she exits the bar. It’s a short walk to the car, but she stops in her tracks as soon as she sees us.

Her golden hair is blowing in the wind. She’s gorgeous with smooth skin, rosy cheeks, and plump lips.

We all start walking towards her when the wind blows her scent over to me. The wild berries and eucalyptus scent is fresh this time and mixed with a new distinct characteristic.

Mate.

She’s my mate! This perfect specimen is my fated mate!

“Mate!” I growl, running ahead of the others.

Her eyes widen before she whispers, “What?”

I wrap my arms around her waist, spinning her around in a circle before dropping her down in front of me. I stare into her perfect mossy green eyes, which are wide with shock.

“You’re my mate! I’m Felix.”

She doesn’t say anything, and I realize my mistake.

“Oh, of course. I’m sorry, you’re a vampire. You need to taste my blood to know.” I offer my neck to her, hoping she leans in and takes a bite of me.

I’m already anticipating the perfect stings of her fangs.

I glance back while my head is turned. Aksel and Griffyn are standing there, frozen, watching us. What’s wrong with them?

Since I don’t feel her sweet lips pressed against my neck, I turn back. She’s just standing there staring at me. Is she not excited to be my mate?

My shoulders drop, and I step backward. “Oh.”

“Wait, no!” Her hand shoots out but doesn’t touch me. “Don’t go. I’m not rejecting you. I just don’t want to jump into this too fast.”

My smile comes back in an instant. She wants to explore this with me? Then I’ll win her over. She’ll be mine.

“Of course! I’m sorry I overwhelmed you. Let’s start over,” I stick my hand out to shake. “I’m Felix.”

She slowly brushes her soft hand against mine, shaking it. “I’m Anna. What are you doing here?”

Reality comes crashing down around me. We were stalking her as part of our mission.

“Uh,” I start, but Aksel, the asshole, steps in.

“We are here to ask you everything you know about a vampire named Ryan.”

Her entire body locks up as she glares at him.

Why do I feel like he’s ruining this for me on purpose?

“Aly and her mates told you everything,” She answers, trying to walk around us.

She’s leaving.

“I highly doubt that,” Aksel answers, sticking his arm out to keep her in place.

She turns to look at me for help, and that inspires me to step in.
