“We talked to her, and Aksel was a dick, worse than usual. No idea why,” Griffyn answers.

“Do you think she knows something?” I ask.

He shrugs. “No idea, man. We barely talked to her.”

“Why do you think they left her out when they explained how they knew Ryan? Why not tell us?” I ask.

“They’re protective of her,” Blaze answers.

“They won’t like us confronting her like this,” Griffyn adds.

“We can take them. We are just doing our jobs. If they want Ryan found, they shouldn’t be hiding things from us,” I say.

I feel like bad blood between Aksel’s family and their pack is getting in the way, but this isn’t about that. Our mission is to find Ryan, and that’s what we are going to do.

It’s only mid-afternoon. What are we going to do with the rest of our day?

“Do you think there’s anything fun to do around here?” I ask.

Blaze grunts, but Griffyn smiles, saying, “Probably not. Aksel will pitch a fit if we go out. On second thought, we should do that.”

“No. We shouldn’t risk running into any of them outside of our plan,” Blaze says. He’s always following orders.

“Then what are we going to do?” I whine.

Missions can get so boring. We always have to come up with creative ways to pass the time. During the last mission, we got really into poker. It’s more difficult when Blaze and I can smell changes in emotions and Aksel can sense them. Griffyn does a good job hiding his, so it works out.

“Did anyone bring cards?” I ask hopefully. I can’t believe I didn’t think to grab some.

“Yeah, I did.” Griffyn heads over to his bag. He digs around, throwing clothes on the floor and making a complete mess before finding them.

“Poker?” Blaze asks.

“Poker,” I confirm.

We set up around the table and deal the cards. No one bothers to get Aksel. If he’s in a bad mood, he will be terrible company.

It’s time to go find the vampire when we are distracted by Aksel’s phone.

“It’s the director. He needs to debrief us on a policy change in ten minutes. Someone from every team has to be there.”

So either we postpone this excursion, or someone stays back. Knowing Aksel, we’re going. The guy is too impatient to pass up an opportunity to move the mission along.

My stomach pulls at the idea of staying behind, though I’m unsure why. Sure, I don’t want to listen to a boring lecture on policies. My instincts tell me I don’t want to miss whatever is going to happen.

“You need me to confirm it’s the same scent from Nicoli’s house,” I say. Blaze could do it too, but no one contradicts me.

We all know Aksel isn’t staying behind, so it’s either Griffyn or Blaze.

“I’ll probably piss the director off and get our team in trouble,” Griffyn says, smirking. He does have a habit of doing that. “Plus, we don’t need muscle to confront her.”

“Vampires are crazy strong!” I say, but they just ignore me.

Blaze grunts. “Fine. I’ll meet up with you after the meeting. I want to get a read on her, too. Just don’t let her go until I’ve had my chance.”

He sits back on the bed, grabbing his phone off the dresser.
