“Ryan discovered his own mate a long time ago and that she was a hunter. Being the psychopath he is, he killed her by accident, and now he wants the world to suffer. He wants Aly dead and tried to use me to do it. When the Supernatural Council set their sights on him, he went into hiding, and we haven’t heard from him since. How’s that?”

“We knew most of that,” Aksel answers. He is such an asshole.

He jerks back in his seat with a grunt. Did someone kick him?

“Okay, great, then I guess we are done here.” I start to stand up.

“No, don’t go. Ignore him.” Felix grabs my hand, pulling me back into my seat.

I cross my arms and sit back in my seat.

“How did he try to kill Aly with you?” Aksel demands.

I sit there stoically, ignoring the asshole. When Griffyn and Felix catch on, they both start laughing.

“You said he tried to use you to kill Aly. Can you explain that?” Griffyn asks sweetly.

“Yes.”

I’m surprised I don’t hear Aksel’s teeth break from how hard he’s grinding them.

I pretend I’m pausing for dramatic effect, but really, this part is tough to say aloud.

“He turned me…siring me to him in the process. He wanted me to kill her, but I’m no longer sired to him, so it’s not a problem.”

That’s a small white lie considering it’s only my magical necklace that keeps me from ripping my best friend’s throat out. I don’t trust them enough to tell them that much. Even if one is my mate.

They’re all staring at me.

Felix sets a hand on my arm before saying, “I’m sorry. That’s terrible.”

I just shrug in response. No need to get into my trauma with them.

“So he might come after you?” Blaze asks, his voice rough.

Once again, I just shrug.

“Well, unless there’s anything else you can tell me-us. Then we really should be going. Best of luck to you.” Aksel stands up, but the others don’t follow him.

“We aren’t leaving her. She’s my mate, and she could be in danger. She’s part of the case and could be useful. I think she should stick with us,” Felix says. It’s the harshest I’ve heard his voice so far.

“No.”

“He’s right, Aksel,” Blaze adds.

“None of us are leaving her,” Griffyn chimes in.

What is happening? Why would they care about me? Felix, I understand, but the rest of them? Maybe they’re protective of their friend’s mate.

“She will only hinder the case.” Aksel sits back down, glaring at me.

“You really are an asshole, huh?” I say sweetly.

I think I’ll call him Akshole. It’s fitting.

“He is,” Griffyn whispers.

“I could be useful,” I say, meeting Aksel’s glare and lifting my chin in the air.
