“I-uh,” His shoulders drop, and he looks resigned. “I’m feeding. I used a lot of energy at the fight.”

That explains why he’s been slow. This can’t be very satisfying for him. Without being involved, this is like scraps to him.

I’m about to ask why he would be feeding like this instead of finding someone out on campus, but I decide it’s not really my business. This is convenient. Maybe he doesn’t want to go out.

“So, I’m assuming you don’t want to go find Aksel with me then?” I ask.

His meal isn’t over.

He shakes his head, and I make my exit. I’m going to have to subtly keep an eye on this.

Downstairs Aksel is sitting in front of his laptop, working away. He glances up to see it’s me before smiling.

“Blaze, what can I do for you?”

I know Aksel can come across poorly, and Anna has every right to dislike him, but he’s actually always been a good friend to me. I think two damaged souls found comfort in each other.

“Why is the council hiding things on this case?” I ask.

He pushes his computer away, giving me his full attention.

“I don’t know, but it’s suspicious as hell. We wouldn’t have gotten anywhere if the director hadn’t mentioned the Ashford’s,” Aksel says.

It’s not obvious, but the twitch in his cheek shows he’s agitated.

“Do you think your dad is involved?” I ask carefully.

I’ve known Aksel for a long time, and his dad has always been a no-go topic. He only chooses to share what’s necessary.

The muscle in his cheek jumps again.

I don’t move and let him decide how much he wants to say.

“He could be, but I don’t know anything on the matter. It doesn’t reflect well on the council as a whole, though. They promised to find Ryan but allowed the necessary information to be redacted.”

I don’t miss that he’s moving the conversation away from his father and to the council as a whole, but I agree with his assessment.

“I was thinking-,” But I cut myself off. Even if Aksel is my friend, I don’t want to sound like an idiot to him. It’s why I tend to keep quiet.

“Blaze. You know you can always speak freely when it’s the two of us. I won’t judge you for having an idea or even asking about my father.”

This is the side of Aksel I wish he showed the world. It would stop people from looking at me like I’m crazy when I stand up for him. But I know he has his reasons, even if I don’t know them.

“Should we trust the council with anything we find? Someone could be tampering with the case. If we get too close, they might pull us or step in.”

Aksel nods along as I speak.

“You’re right. I’ll use personal resources for the time being and keep our reports brief. That will help us keep the female vampire’s involvement quiet as well.

“Speaking ofAnna. Any chance you could be nicer to her? She’s… Felix’s mate.”

“No.”

He pulls his laptop closer, effectively ending the conversation.

I take my dismissal, moving into the kitchen to fix a snack for myself. Of course, Aksel has arranged for there to be food in the cupboards and fridge.

I’m putting a plate of nachos smothered in queso cheese in the microwave when my phone buzzes in my pocket. My stomach drops when I see the unknown number flash across my screen, familiar to me but not saved in my phone.
