Of course, he got it from Teddy. I knew the consequences of contacting him about the fight. Showing up and throwing punches again was just the cherry on top.

Phantom hands claw at my skin, slicing it open. Darkness covers my eyes, trying to pull me under, but I refuse to join it.

I use my shifter strength to smash the phone in my hand to pieces. I need a new one.

Twenty Two

Anna

I’m lying out on the couch reading one of my favorite spicy novels. It’s a comfort read I always come back to. It’s soothing, like an old friend.

There’s a knock on the door, but before I can even get off the couch, the door crashes open.

What the hell?

Ryan stalks in, intent on me. I jump up, putting some space between us. I have never seen him act this way before, and he’s scaring me.

When he gets closer, I see his eyes are tinted red. Are they contacts? Or is he on drugs?

“Ryan? What’s going on?” My voice trembles.

My sweet but secretive boyfriend has never looked at me like this before. It’s murderous, intent to kill anything in sight, and what’s in sight is me.

“Here you are. I saw you, and now I have to kill you. It’s just even better that you belong to him.”

I don’t have a second to comprehend what that means before he’s lunging for me.

I try to run, but he’s so much quicker than me. Once his hands are locked around my arms, there’s no escape. He’s stronger than anyone I’ve ever met.

Is he supernatural? How could I have missed that once I learned about them?

“Ryan, whatever is going on, you don’t have to do this! We can work through it.”

Terror is coursing through my veins. My heart feels like it’s going to burst out of my chest, and my breathing is shallow.

“Oh, I’m sorry, dear, but I do have to do this.”

He’s never called me dear before. It sounds so patronizing coming out of his mouth.

“When you come back, kill your best friend Aly for me.”

He bites his wrist, so nonchalantly that it actually scares me more. . I have no idea what he’s doing until he’s shoved his bleeding wrist against my lips and plugged my nose, forcing me to ingest the blood.

It’s disgusting and metallic tasting.

Then his teeth rip into my neck. All I know is excruciating pain, then darkness.

“Wake up, Anna!”

Someone is shaking me, but the memory still has me in its grip. All I can feel is teeth sinking into me, tearing my neck open, and bleeding me dry.

“Anna!”

It’s only because I recognize Felix’s voice that I’m able to shake free. I shoot upright in the bed, a shaking, sweaty mess, to see Felix staring at me in concern.

“What happened?” I ask. Speaking sends me into a coughing fit since my throat is so dry.

Felix rubs a soothing hand down my back.
