“Just end it,” He whispers.

“We are going to get you help, sir. How long have you been trapped down here?”

Anna and the others finally rush over, realizing what’s going on.

“There’s been a man kept down here?” Anna’s hand flies up to her mouth in horror.

He’s mumbling nonsense.

“Let’s get him sitting up and some water,” I suggest.

With my hands under his arms, I pull him into a sitting position and lean him against the wall.

Griffyn takes off, presumably to get him some water.

His skin is so white it’s almost transparent. It’s clear he’s been down here a long time with his chapped lips and sunken frame.

Anna helps me get him comfortable, and it seems like he’s finally starting to focus on us.

“Do you know where you are?” I ask gently.

“In my basement,” He whispers. It’s hoarse from his dry throat.

I won’t push him for more answers until he has some water. How long has it been since he had water?

Griffyn is back seconds later with a full glass. The man is too weak to hold it, so I press it against his lip, tipping it back so he can get some water.

I start really slow, not wanting him to choke or get sick.

After half a glass, I pull back.

“How’s that?” I ask.

We’ve all been trained in how to handle victims and medical situations, but I’m taking the lead on this one.

“Better.” His voice is still hoarse and weak. I’m not sure he has much longer.

“We need to get you out of here and find some medical attention,” I tell him.

I try to stand him up, but he resists me.

“No, it’s my time. Let me die.”

What? He wants to die down here in the dark?

“If it’s really your time, then you can die comfortably.” My voice is stern. I turn to Aksel. “Give me some transports and I’ll take him to a magical hospital. Once he’s better, maybe we can question him.”

Aksel nods, passing three over. We always carry extras if we are planning on using transport charms. You never know what is going to happen when you’re in the field.

“Wait, I’ll come with you!” Anna moves closer, helping me support the man’s weigh, not that I need it.

“Don’t you think you would be the most likely to find clues here?” Griffyn asks her.

“We’ve already searched the entire place. You guys are going to do one last sweep, then we will meet you at the house. I won’t be missed.”

“You can’t go. This will have to be recorded in the mission since the hospital is involved, and we can’t have people knowing you’re on this case with us. Griffyn can go with Felix so he has backup,” Aksel says.

For once, he’s not being a dick to Anna, and I think she sees that because she leaves my side. I wouldn’t have minded having her company, but he’s right; it’s better this way.
