Griffyn comes next to me, and the three of us transport out.

The magical hospital doesn’t look like one from the outside. The exterior is just another office building, but once you’re inside, it’s exactly the same.

We can’t go to normal hospitals without exposing ourselves. Shifters might shift when injured, while others might lose control of their powers. Of course, it still happens. If you’re unconscious, a well-meaning human will call an ambulance. The council will send a team in to clean it up.

I lift the man into my arms, carrying him inside. He’s passed out. As soon as the front desk sees him, they call for a gurney.

“What’s wrong?” The nurse asks.

“We found him confined in a basement. Not sure what’s wrong, but obviously dehydration and malnourishment,” I tell her.

They get moving into action immediately, taking him into the back and away from us.

The nurse comes back to me with a clipboard in her hand. She is all business, and I appreciate it. A lot of the staff is standing around staring at Griffyn.

“Do you have any information about him?”

“No. He was found on a case.” I flash her the tattoo on my wrist that indicates I’m a member of The Supernatural Special Forces.

She nods in recognition, so I continue. “If you could reach out when he’s awake enough for us to ask him some questions, that would be great.”

After she takes down my information, the two of us leave. It’s out of our hands now.

Griffyn’s shoulders drop, and he seems relieved when we get outside.

“Something bothering you?” I ask.

He looks back into the building. “Just a lot of people staring.”

I don’t push him, but that’s a strange answer from him. Normally, he would be soaking up that attention or flirting with a few of them. He might even use one of them to feed if there’s time.

He could have, but he didn’t.

We transport out of there, heading back to the house.

The others are back already, gathered in the living room.

Anna is rubbing her temples while they all sit there in silence. Poor thing, not the most lively group to be left with.

I go stand behind her chair and start rubbing her shoulders. Maybe she just needs to release a little tension.

“He’s at the hospital. They’re going to contact me when we can question him. Did you guys find anything else?” I ask.

“No. He’s our best lead, so hopefully, we can question him soon,” Aksel says.

It comes out so heartless.

“Don’t you mean, hopefullyhe gets better? Shouldn’t you care more about the man than the case?” Anna snaps at him.

Aksel rolls his eyes but doesn’t answer. He has gotten ten times worse since she showed up in our lives. I had no idea he hated women that much.

“Yes, hopefully, the man has a full and speedy recovery. Who knows how long the poor guy has been trapped down there,” I say, earning a smile from Anna.

She rests her head on her hand.
