“You’re not fine! That’s a nasty hit to the face. Where are they? They’re never coming back here again.”

Mike’s fierce protection of me is sweet.

“They’ve already been taken out like trash,” I promise him.

“Go home and rest. Take as much time as you need,” Mike says.

He gently pats my arm. I appreciate how much he cares. Usually, I wouldn’t take the time off and leave him short handed, even if my nose was broken. But this time, I have to. I’ll be healed in a day, and there’s no way to explain that to humans.

“Thanks.”

I quickly grab my stuff and head out the door, looking for Felix and Griffyn.

I find them with busted knuckles.

I decide not to comment. They were protecting me.

Felix was protecting his mate.

The shifter wraps his arms around me, pulling me in for a hug and a fierce kiss. He dominates my mouth before pulling back.

“I wanted to kill that fucker for hurting you,” he confesses.

“Ditto,” Griffyn adds.

“You both know I’m fine. Don’t overreact. Let’s just get home.”

“Overreact? Killing him would have been more of an overreaction than what we did,” Felix says.

“Wait until Blaze sees you,” Griffyn says. He grabs my hand, giving it a small squeeze before getting in the car.

I hear Blaze’s roar of anger from my room later that night.

Blaze stomps into my room, checking me over. He doesn’t say anything while he works.

I let him do what he needs. He’s scowling at my black eyes, but he knows as well as I do that they’re already healing.

“I’m going with you next time,” he demands.

“There’s no need to freak out. Felix and Griffyn handled it. He’s just some human. I would have been fine on my own.”

“Even humans can be dangerous.”

Blaze settles at the end of my bed without moving or saying anything. After an extended period of awkward silence, I decide it’s okay to fall asleep and leave him there brooding.

Felix rushes into the room, holding his phone up. “The old man is awake! They just called to say we can come to question him!”

He sounds so excited. It’s infectious. Is this going to be the break in the case we need?

“From Ryan’s basement?” I ask, just needing to clarify before I get too excited.

“Yes!”

Aksel stands up. “We should go now. There’s always a chance his health could take a turn for the worst. We don’t want to lose this opportunity.”
