I jump at the sound of Aksel’s voice. “Do you know anything about where the vampire might be now?”

The man keeps his eyes on me, but they widen with fear. Once again, his heart rate picks up but not as much as before. He pulls his blanket tighter around him.

There’s a hissing sound, and his eyes start to droop.

“Do you know anything about where the vampire might be now?” I ask gently.

It’s better to have his attention on me.

“No. Most of my memories are hazy at best. I have a feeling he told me, but I can’t remember any details. I’m sure he only said it because he knew I wouldn’t remember.”

He turns away from me, sinking further into his pillows. I have a feeling I’m running out of time. He’s falling asleep from the drugs.

“When do you think he told you?” I ask.

Maybe if he can think about the when, the details will come back.

“Right before he left.”

He rolls over, giving me his back, and I know it’s time to go. If we want the chance to come back in the future, we can’t upset him now. He’s knocked out from the drugs.

I back away to the exit, pushing the others out ahead of me.

We stay silent all the way from the elevator to Aksel’s car in the parking lot.

“Damn!” Felix curses once the doors are closed.

“I was hoping he would have more information,” Griffyn says.

Aksel pulls away onto the main road.

“It’s not his fault. He was barely alive when we found him. Of course, he wasn’t completely cognizant all that time,” I say, defending the poor guy.

“Is there a way to jog his memory?” Aksel asks. He sounds frustrated.

“If only we could watch that interaction!” Felix smacks the seat.

“Wait.” Aksel doesn’t say anything else.

Felix and I share a look with raised eyebrows.

“Are you going to follow that up or just randomly say wait?” Griffyn asks. He drops his hand back on my thigh.

“I’m thinking. Be quiet,” Aksel demands.

Griffyn, Felix, and I share a look, holding back our laughter.

We sit in silence for so long, it’s awkward. I’m about to break it when Aksel finally snaps his fingers.

“We need a mage for a time spell!”

I look around, wondering if the others know what he’s talking about, but it doesn’t seem like they do.

“What is that?” I ask.

“It’s very old magic and not commonly used anymore. The spell allows you to go back in time and witness an event. You can’t change it in any way; only watch it,” Aksel explains.

He sounds excited, and I am too. If we can do this, we can finally find Ryan!
