“Where are we going to find a mage willing to do the spell?” Blaze asks. He sounds interested, which is a great sign.

No one speaks up.

“There are mages from the council that we could use,” Felix says, but he doesn’t sound that excited about it.

They never want to involve their employer, which makes zero sense to me. It’s time I confront them about it.

“Why do you guys seem distrustful of the council? Aren’t they your employers?”

They all freeze, and no one immediately answers me. Slowly, they all turn to look at Aksel.

I would rather hear Felix explain it, but I guess I have to hear it from Aksel.

“That’s private. You aren’t privy to all the information related to this case.”

I guess I won’t be hearing it from Akshole after all.

“You are the worst! Here I thought we were finally working well together. If you won’t share with me, then I’ll keep things to myself, and we will never find Ryan!” I’m shouting. He makes me so angry.

Felix wraps an arm around my shoulders. “Ignore him. We don’t trust the council because they haven’t been transparent when it comes to this case. Key information was missing.”

“Felix!” Aksel roars.

Pretty sure Felix is in trouble, but I’ve never liked him more than this moment. Going against Aksel for me means a lot.

I lean up and kiss under his chin. “Thank you.”

Griffyn squeezes my thigh. “Next time, I’ll tell you if it earns me a kiss.”

I roll my eyes. “Now that I know more, I can help. Funny how that works.”

“How can you help? Aren’t you brand new to this world? You can’t just find a mage on craigslist,” Aksel spits.

“Let her speak,” Blaze interjects.

I appreciate it.

“I know a mage who will help us out. There are just a few conditions.”

After making the guys promise not to reveal anything about the bar I work at, I take them to Aly’s house. They were very suspicious, but I told them it was the condition of using my friend.

I texted Aly asking if I could come over with some people and talk to her. She agreed. I’m not sure I’m ready to have this conversation, but needing a mage has forced my hand.

I direct Aksel until we’re pulling up outside their house.

“Nicoli Ashford? You want us to use him for this? There’s no way he’ll agree to help,” Aksel spits.

He actually starts to turn the car away.

“Stop! Park, and let’s go in. He’s my friend, and he will help. Probably not for you, but absolutely for me,” I say.

Aksel glares at me through the rearview mirror but does park the car.

“Aksel and Nic don’t get along well,” Griffyn tells me.
