It feels like we are so close to finding Ryan. I can get my justice. I just have to trust these guys to do it.

Griffyn smirks at me. “He really is.”

Thirty One

Griffyn

It was hard to leave Anna behind. I know she really wanted to be here. I’m certain she hates Aksel even more after he went too far in order to keep her behind.

I think we could have reasoned with her, but of course, Aksel took the lead and fucked it up. She avoided the rest of us until right before we left. We got a quick goodbye and Ryan’s old sweatshirt shoved at us.

I’m telling myself she might have even been concerned about us.

We used transport charms to get to St. James, leaving Anna a couple for emergencies and so she could come join us.

Blaze and Felix have their noses deep in Ryan’s sweatshirt.

Can I admit I’m jealous she kept an ex-boyfriend’s sweatshirt? No, I can’t. But Felix was staring at that thing like it was diseased.

At least St. James is a small place. If he said his house was in Chicago or another big city, there’s no way we would be able to find him by scent.

This place looks like it has a population of one hundred.

Aksel and I follow Felix and Blaze as they wander around the town with their noses in the air, trying to catch a scent. We walked the edge of the harbor a couple times.

It seems like they’re following something when they take a more direct approach out of the main town area, but neither turns around to fill us in.

I take the moment to confront Aksel. “You could have been nicer to Anna. She’s reasonable. We could have just talked it out with her instead of threats.”

He clenches his jaw, glaring at me. “I did what I had to, to ensure a successful mission. As theleader, you need to trust me.”

Now I’m grinding my teeth, holding back a response. He knows I hate it when he pulls rank bullshit. We are a team. We should work like one. Instead, he wants it to be a dictatorship, and the rest of us are always fighting him on it. Mostly me. And not really Blaze.

Everyone has stopped in front of me, so I look up to see what has caught their attention. It’s a huge, extravagant, white mansion covered in windows. It’s almost completely glass.

We stay behind the surrounding trees in case anyone is looking out those windows.

“Instead of his scent, we should just look for mansions in the area. This guy has a type,” I say.

“A vampire scent that’s very similar to the sweatshirt surrounds this place. It’s not exact,” Felix tells us.

“Could he have altered it, been wearing cologne, or maybe it’s just too old?” I ask. It’s weird the scent isn’t exact.

Felix just shrugs. Blaze doesn’t answer.

“Does everyone know what to do?” Aksel asks, taking over and searching each of us for signs of weakness.

It’s time to go in.

“Yes. We’ve gone over the plan. Let’s do this,” I say.

The four of us march towards the house. We considered spreading out to cover all exits, but since he might have a transport charm, we wanted to stay together and get our hands on him quicker.

Blaze melts the lock on the door, a quieter entry than breaking it down. I ease it open, slipping inside ahead of the others. The entryway is empty, allowing us all to be undetected.

The wards on the house stop anything coming from the outside related to magic, but there’s never been one that can keep people from just walking inside.

A glitch in magic.
