She bit her lower lip and had that girl-lost look about her. “I can’t go ahead with the court trial. It will break me. I’m going to drop the charges. Mother thinks I’m crazy. She’s begging me not to.”

“I agree with your mother. Bram needs to be locked up. He’s dangerous.”

“Can’t we stick to a restraining order? I spoke to the lawyer, and he advised we could put together a list of stipulations.”

I shook my head. I understood her fear well enough. No one wanted to face their assailant.

“Maybe have the trial with only your counsel present.”

“I just want it gone. Like forgotten.”

“Are you fucking serious? This guy put you in hospital, Savvie. If you don’t do something, I might.”

Her eyes widened. “Oh no. I couldn’t lose you. Please don’t go near him. He’ll get you locked up. I can’t do without you.”

My heart swelled as a sad smile grew. “I can look after myself, Savvie. Don’t worry.”

I stroked her cheek, and her face softened.

“The guy’s a fucking monster.”

“Will you come with me to the lawyers? Can you help me with this?”

Her big blue eyes shone with that fragile, lost expression that could bring me down to my knees. Protecting her meant everything to me.

I draped my arm around her, pulling her in tight like I wished to transfer some of my strength. “I’ll do whatever you want, Savvie. You know that.”

Every night since our return, Savanah stayed in my apartment. She’d even offered to upgrade my living arrangements, which, being fiercely independent, I rejected.

“Can I come over tonight?” She bit her lip.

“Of course. I’ll cook us a nice big steak.” I smiled.

Her lips trembled into a smile. “I’d like that. So you’ll come with me tomorrow?”

I nodded. I couldn’t deny this beautiful, half-broken woman anything.

She went to go when she said, “That woman wants to fuck you. I hope you don’t get all hard around her. She’s got enormous tits.”

For someone close to thirty, Savanah sometimes reminded me of a teenager. Sometimes someone even younger. “Savvie, why would I go for her when I have you warming my body every night?”

“She seems hot for you, though. She might offer to blow you or something.”

I knitted my brows and studied her expression to see if she was kidding. She remained serious. “God, Savanah, I’m not that type of man.”

“But you were, weren’t you? You said you were wild once.”

I kissed her gently. “Tonight. And look, Savvie, don’t worry about anything. Although I would consider pressing charges.”

Two hours later, I received a call from Caroline, summoning me to Merivale. As I walked along the forest to the hall, I wondered how Savanah’s mother would take me dating her daughter, even though for now, we’d decided to keep this relationship between us.

Declan and Ethan were in the office when I arrived, and Caroline pointed to a seat and got straight to it.

“I know you’re close to my daughter. It’s no secret that she has a deep affection for you.”

I had to smile at that old-fashioned definition of attraction. Whether Savvie’s mum knew that we were sleeping together was another matter. In many ways, it irked me. Like I’d betrayed her trust by taking advantage of her daughter.

Had I?
