She giggled. “He’s hot, though, and he gave me the eye. You must have seen that.”

I shook my head. “You’re incorrigible.”

Adrenaline pumped through me, and with a million pounds to spend, I had my heart set on a series titledTwilight.

The collection arrived on stage for bidding. Propped up on an easel, the six oil paintings featured monochromatic works in blue, depicting the sky, with each canvas intensifying as the night crept in.

When I won the bidding, I nearly jumped out of my seat, pumping a triumphant fist, but I composed myself and, despite the big smile on my face, channelled my dignified, cool mother instead.

My father would have loved this collection. When I was young, we often visited galleries together. He seemed to prefer smaller, independently run studios, where he made some struggling artists’ day by giving them much more than their asking price.

“That was a steal,” I whispered.

“Gorgeous.” Sienna’s attention headed for the attractive older man seated in the next row.

“The art or him?” I cocked my head.

“Both.” She ran her hands down her ruler-straight hair.

“Meet you in the foyer.” I rose. “And behave.”

I slipped into the office and scribbled a cheque for two hundred thousand pounds and arranged delivery of the art.

Sipping champagne and ready to pounce, Sienna waited for me in the reception room, ogling the distinguished man in Armani.

On a recent night out, Sienna and Jacinta had admitted to being ready for marriage and children. They’d changed their tunes, but then, so had I. I wanted that too.

For the first time ever.

And now, I may never have children. Though I tried not to think about it, the thought of never being a mother gnawed at me like an unrelenting ache.

It came as no surprise to find Sienna fluttering her eyelashes at the dripping-in-charm Pierce Brosnan lookalike.

“This is Marcus,” she said as I joined them. She opened her arm out towards me. “This is Savanah.”

He turned to me. “I see you bought theTwilightseries.”

Unable to hide my joy and squaring my shoulders with pride, I nodded. “The collection’s for our family resort.”

“Here in London?”

“No. Bridesmere.”

“Oh, are you a Lovechilde?” He smiled.

“How did you guess?” Sienna chuckled.

His gaze lingered on Sienna for a moment before returning to me.

“I attended the opening of Elysium,” he said. “I’ve since stayed there twice. Can’t stay away. Especially now.” His eyebrow arch piqued my curiosity. “That collection will look fabulous there.”

“Yes. I think so.” I smiled, buoyed by my win. It felt that way, considering the art had come in lower than expected.

“I’ll be there tomorrow.” His attention turned from me to Sienna. “I’m invited to a soiree hosted by Reynard Crisp, whom I’m sure you’re acquainted with, given his affiliation with your mother.”

I glanced at Sienna and took a moment to respond. “So, what event is this?”

“Ma Chérie is hosting a night, I believe.”
