“My brother passed away last night. And well…” I took a deep breath. How would my potential future mother-in-law take my being affiliated with a crime family?

I knitted my fingers tightly. “I know this sounds bad, and I had absolutely no part in it…”

“You can speak plainly.” Her eyes held mine. “And I’m sorry to hear about your brother.”

“As a drug user, my brother hung out with the London underbelly. He revealed last night the existence of a drug syndicate running from here. Having heard about my relationship with Savanah, he felt a need to warn me. He spoke of a casino behind a resort near Bridesmere as the headquarters of a major drug cartel.”

She released a breath. “That doesn’t surprise me.”

I frowned. “Really?”

“Anything with Reynard behind it is likely to throw up dark matter.”

That strange analogy to cosmology distracted me for a moment. “But isn’t he a close affiliate?”

“Not by choice,” she muttered under her breath.

Savanah often complained about how Crisp had something over her mother, which was now confirmed, going on Caroline’s sudden dark admission.

“Leave it with me.” She swivelled her high-back leather chair and stared out the window.

Despite her closing the discussion, I remained. “These people are dangerous, Caroline. If they learn that their cover’s blown, they won’t stop at anything to remain a secret.”

She turned to face me again. “What have you got in mind?”

“I’ll think of something. But I wouldn’t tell anyone. Least of all, Crisp.”

“That’s sound advice.” Her eyes warmed. “I’m glad you’re part of our family.”

My eyebrows rose sharply. Caroline had never as much as kissed my cheek. “That’s if Savanah doesn’t throw a wobbly.”

“She’ll be fine. I’ll explain it to her. And please don’t tell her about the drug dealing.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.” I gave her a knowing half-smile.

She looked understandably shaken as I left her office.

Chapter 31

Savanah

Siennaswannedin, dressedin white flares, a tight white shirt, and a gold belt. I had to look twice. She normally went for loud colours.

“What’s got you looking so Liz Hurley?” I asked, beckoning the waiter.

“I’m off to the Riviera. Got a flight to catch in three hours.” Her voice bubbled over with excitement, making me smile.

Once we made our order, I asked, “So what’s happening?”

“Remember I told you about Mason, that older man I’ve started seeing?”

I had to think back to the last few calls we’d shared. It was difficult to keep up with Sienna and her revolving door of lovers, and although I couldn’t recall, I nodded.

“We’re off to Greece on his yacht.” Her excitement made me crave that high one felt when looking forward to spending alone time with a sexy man.

That three-week stay at Lochridge seemed like ages ago despite it only being a couple of months back. Drifting in the boat, with Carson fishing and me either reading or marvelling at the configuration of migrating birds in the sky, was one of many beautiful memories that filled me with warm nostalgia.

Sienna wore a sad pout. “What’s wrong, Savs? You look miserable. Last time we spoke, you were blissed out after multiple orgasms.”
