“Maybe after a drink or two, I might pluck up the courage,” I said.

“That doesn’t sound like you, Carson,” Declan said.

“I’ve gotten bashful in my old age.”

Theadora giggled at me and then took Declan’s hand. “Come on, let’s dance.”

Declan saluted me and joined the scrum of dancers.

“Start Me Up” by the Stones came on, and I rocked my body ever so slightly.

Savanah, who struck me as tipsy, sashayed over. “You’re not dancing?”

“I don’t dance.” I returned a tight smile.

Her head jerked back as though I’d admitted to being a fruitarian.

“But just then, you were grooving on the spot, I noticed.”

“I love the Stones.”

Back to her sassy best, she placed down her glass and removed the bottle from my hand. I rather liked a bossy woman on the odd occasion, especially in bed. Even her soft hand on my arm raised my temperature.

We hit the dance floor, where she swayed her hips and waved her arms up in the air, while I moved my shoulders and hips ever so slightly. I wasn’t what you called an exuberant dancer. There was only one kind of dancing I liked and that involved being naked in bed with a willing partner.

But it was worth making a fool of myself just to see Savanah move. I particularly liked it when she spun around, revealing stockings clipped onto a garter.

Did someone turn on the heating?

“Nights in White Satin” came on next, giving me goose bumps. That song always touched my soul, or were Savanah’s beautiful eyes making me tingle?

She was about to walk from the dance floor when I grabbed her hand. “Where are you going?”

Chapter 7

Savanah

Despitesix-inchheels,Ionly reached Carson’s shoulder. He held my hand, and butterflies fluttered through me, and his steady gaze stole my breath. I read experience, strength, and dependability. He struck me as deep, unlike the immature men in my scene with their baboonish grins. But then, they were boys whereas Carson was a man.

“I thought you didn’t know how to dance,” I said, as he wrapped his arm around my waist and pressed his strong, firm body against mine.

“I didn’t say I couldn’t dance. I just said I didn’t dance.” His mouth curled at one end.

He smelled of bath soap, pine, and like a man who could make me come with just one touch.

Taking the lead, he moved like liquid. My feet seemed airborne as we slid together as one.

His firm hold made me feel secure. I would have even jumped out of a plane with him holding onto me, harnessed in a parachute. For someone who hated heights, that was huge.

Drooling attraction aside, I had to keep reminding myself that he’d already rejected me.

If I’m not his type, then what’s that growing against my stomach?

I might have even melted on the spot if he wasn’t holding me up.

“You’re great at this,” I said.

“Thanks. Those ballroom dancing classes weren’t a complete waste.”
