“Can you promise me you won’t do anything?”

She laughed darkly. “What am I going to do? Knot the sheet and hang myself? Drugs maybe. But I don’t have any.”

“Savanah, don’t talk like that. We can fix this.”

“And then what? That fucked-up sex tape will end up being viewed by everyone, and you won’t want to know me?”

“I’m a grown-up. I can handle it.”

“I bet you can. I just hate that you’ll see me as a filthy slut.”

I frowned. “I could never see you as that. I know this scene, and I also know that a night on alcohol and drugs can make a person do things they later regret. We’ve all got one of those stories.”

Her face brightened slightly. “You’ve done that? Had a sex tape?”

I shook my head. “Not that I’m aware of. But I’ve had regrettable sex. Lots of it.”

“With a man?” she asked.

My head drew back. I wondered why she asked that. “Nope. I’m into women. One hundred percent.” I studied her. “Why ask me that?”

She knitted her fingers. “No reason.”

I returned to the function, where people chatted and laughed as though that earlier drama hadn’t even happened, and found Caroline Lovechilde with her boyfriend. He had his arm wrapped around her waist, and they looked very much in love.

“Can I have a quick word?” I asked.

She followed me to a quiet corner.

“Savanah’s asked for a couple of Xanax.” I gave her an apologetic half-smile.

Her eyes held mine for a moment, and I caught a hint of unease.

She rummaged in her bag and then passed me a tissue. “There are a couple. She knows I won’t give her more.”

“Do you think she might need to go somewhere?”

“Like a hospital?” She frowned.

“She’s really shaken. And she mentioned she wants to die more than once.”

Caroline shook her head. “That wouldn’t be the first time.”

My eyebrows met. “She’s tried to take her life before?”

“No. Never. My daughter can get a tad dramatic, that’s all. I’ve contacted my lawyer. Let’s wait and hope. We can sue. But the Pikes are already mortgaged to the eyeballs.” She touched my hand. “Thanks for doing this. I know my daughter looks up to you.”

I took a breath. Another matter needed discussing. “About what I saw that night at the back of the casino…”

When I’d gone to report my disturbing findings, we were interrupted by her boyfriend, and therefore I wasn’t able to divulge what I’d witnessed.

“I’ve spoken to Manon. Apparently, it was a private function. Dancers.” Her eyebrow lift told me she didn’t believe that.

“One girl looked very young and like she was trying to escape.”

Her brow creased, and the blood drained from her face. Caroline had every reason to be concerned because from where I stood, her granddaughter pushed the unwilling girl ahead.

“Is there any way you can actually get inside?” she asked.
