It’s the last thing I see before I close the door and walk out into the frosty cold and whirling snow. Hiking into the deep snow, I follow the directions she gave me last night, knowing that because of the storm she might be a little off.

My breath huffs out in white clouds as I slog through the thigh-deep snow, one foot after another, balancing the rifle in the crook of my arm.

What feels like hours later, I grind to a stop at the sight of a bright red flash of metal sticking out of a snow bank alongside the narrow mountain road.

Unfortunately, there’s a dark SUV behind where the flash is and I think I’ve found the bad guys. A grim smile curves my lips as I move my rifle to a ready position.

Better they come to me, anyway. I like the hunt…but I’ve got an Angel to get back to.

Stalking slowly closer, I grin wryly when I see the two guys crawling around in the snow, trying to figure out if she’s still in the car. I can hear them grumbling to each other and it gets clearer the closer I get.

“I’m telling you…I think the bitch is in the car dead. She didn’t seem like the smartest. I mean, she told her neighbor where she was going. So that the woman would feed her cat.”

I groan under my breath. I am going to have to have a little chat with my sweet angel. She’s a little too trusting. A little too ready to hand out personal information.

“I don’t know, Marco. I don’t see her in there.”

“Dig deeper. You’re not deep enough to see in the damn window, asshole.”

The bigger guy growls but shovels more snow out of the way of the smaller, angry man. Marco.

They both seem to notice me at the same time and frantically reach for their guns. But by then I’ve already got them covered by the rifle.

“You two just aren’t that smart, are you? I could have driven a damn dump truck up here and you wouldn’t have noticed until I was right on top of you. Amateurs,” I scoff.

“Who the hell are you?” the mouth asks.

“Nobody you know. But I’ve got a message for you. Turn yourself in to the cops and I won’t have to kill you.”

The big dude smirks. “You really think you can kill both of us? Before we kill you?”

I cock my head. “You might get a shot off. You might not. But either way, I’ll kill both of you. And you won’t touch me.”

Marco grunts. “You seem pretty sure of yourself, mister.”

I nod my head calmly, completely in control. “I am. Just as sure as I am that you two idiots probably popped your cherries the other night killing that guy.”

Marco scoffs. “We’ve killed plenty of guys.”

“Boredom doesn’t count.”

“I think that the girl isn’t in this car. I think she’s with this guy. And I think that he thinks he’s a big man.”

My lip curls. “I don’t need to be big to take care of two little pussies like you.”

“How bout this, buddy? You tell us where she is and we’ll let you live.”

I chuckle and lift the rifle higher. “You’ll let me live. That’s rich. There’s only one guy walking away from this car. And it’s gonna be me. So either call the cops while I’m standing here with you or I kill you. Your choice. I think I’m being damn fair giving you any other options.”

The bigger guy stands still and I can see a glitter of unease in his dark eyes. But the other one. The guy in charge. He starts to slide his feet in the snow and I see his hand move. Before he can touch the shoulder holster, I shoot him right in the damn leg. He screams and drops to the snow, crimson blood spraying from where his artery is nicked.

Moaning and groaning, he sobs and tries to grab at his leg. But his eyes are already starting to fade a little bit. The other guy puts his hands in the air and eyes me warily. “You hit the artery, man. I need to help him.”

I shake my head. “Nope. He took his chances. You move and I’ll take yours too.”

Marco stops moaning and grows still. Bright red stains the pure white snow around him and then the snow drifts down on top of his body.
