“You gonna call for the cops or do I need to shoot you, too.”

“Surely you wouldn’t shoot me in cold blood? Just because I didn’t make a phone call?”

Pure, dark hatred blasts out of my eyes and he shivers. “You would, wouldn’t you?”

“So fast that you wouldn’t even realize you were dead.”

He nods. “Can I reach for my phone?”

“Yep.” My eyes harden and I lift the gun back up. “But don’t play with me. Make the damn call.”

He reaches for his phone with his fingertips and holds it out like a dead bug. Then when I nod, he turns it around and dials out.

I eye him until I’m sure that he’s done what I asked. Then I wave the rifle. “Come over this way,” I tell him. As soon as he gets close enough, I stalk around him and slam the butt of the rifle to the back of his head. Without a murmur, he falls to the ground like a felled tree.

I pull out a pair of handcuffs and slap them on his thick wrists. Then I call the mountain police and ask to speak to my buddy, Jeremy.

“Hey, Jeremy? How ya doing, man?”

“Good. What the hell have you been up to? I haven’t heard from you in forever.”

“Just getting by.”

His voice softens. “You good?”

“I am.” I nod. “I’m actually dealing with a little problem that I think came from the city. I’ve got one of them handcuffed but I think the other is dead.”

“What? What the hell happened?” I can hear him moving around even before I answer.

“They decided to ambush someone. I believe they already killed someone else within the last few days. As a matter of fact, I have a witness. She saw the whole thing.”

“She?” His low chuckle makes me roll my eyes.

“Yeah. She. My she. She’s mine.”

“Got it. Does she know or did you pee on her like you were marking your territory?”

My mind drifts back to last night. “I marked her, trust me.”

“TMI, man. You don’t need to give me details.”

“I’m sure you can fill in the blanks. But right now, I need you to come get the bad guys so I can get back to my Angel.”

“I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“Good.” I hang up the phone and eye the two bodies laid out in the snow. Two more to add to the list of men I’ve killed or damaged in my lifetime. I feel good about these two though.

These fuckers absolutely deserved it. Touch what’s mine and you’ll die. Words to live by. My words.

Epilogue One: Harleigh

Waking, I slide my hand across the sheets and feel nothing. Just cold. Lifting my head, I glance around the room. It’s warm, the fire built up. But it’s empty.

He’s gone. I wanted to see him before he left but he snuck out on me.

I sit up and wrap my hands around my knees, feeling tears push at the backs of my eyes. What if he doesn’t come back? What if he’s killed trying to take care of the men chasing me? Will I ever know? Or will he just not come back and eventually, I’ll realize that he’s gone. He’s never coming back.

And I’ll never get the chance to tell him I love him. Bennet is the most loyal, trustworthy and tempting man I’ve ever met. I can’t stop thinking about him. Wanting him. It’s an ache like an abscess in my body that the only cure for is him.
