The solemn words made her think. He tugged on the curl and it sprung up.

“I’ll be waiting outside.”

Shay watched him turn, shutting the door with a soft click. Placing a hand over her heart, she leaned against the dresser, willing her heart and her emotions to still.

Shay satin the VIP terminal waiting for her private jet to fuel up.

“What’s better to say? ‘Join me in Dallas to fight for women’s rights’ or something more heartfelt like ‘Let’s say it out loud: our body, our decision #RoeFest.’”

The fundraising concert named RoeFest was happening in less than forty-eight hours. All the top mainstream artists were heading to Dallas to support women in need.

Shay would perform her hit “Be My Angel,”as demanded of her. Even if she hated it. Coming off her tour, she wouldn’t need to practice a new routine.

Graham stood nearby at attention, his hands pulled behind him like a soldier. The cargo pants and matching bomber jacket did way more for her libido than it should have.

“You didn’t hire me to be a social media manager,” he deadpanned.

“But you have opinions,” she huffed.

“The only opinion of mine that matters is in regards to your protection.”

Shay sighed. She loved his rare soft and carefree moments; they were always overpowered by his grim and serious nature in his dedication to keeping her safe.

“I’m safe. It’s just us two. Nobody else is here.” She gestured around the empty room.

“You’re always being watched.”

“I’m not the president, Graham.”

He scowled deeply. “We won’t have another Vegas incident.”

“I’m fine now, Graham.” Shay dropped her eyes.

“I failed you.” His voice was sharp before sadness filled his gaze. “I won’t have a close call again.”

Shay closed her eyes as a chill ran through her body. It had been over a year since the attack, but they were both past it… Or so she’d thought.

“Graham, you couldn’t have known what he was going to do.” She set her phone down and stood. “I still trust you with my life.”

She crossed the space and placed a hand on his chest, right over his heart.

“I made a mistake that shouldn’t have happened,” he rasped.

“Graham—”

His hand covered hers.

“Hello, party people! Lookin’ good there!” Barney’s loud voice boomed into the lounge.

They jumped apart abruptly, turning to her manager, who wore a velvet tracksuit and hater blocker shades.

“You ready for Dallas, baby? Cowboys, drinkin’, and knockers?”

Graham groaned and Shay rubbed her temples.

“I’m there to perform and then I’m heading back to LA.”
