Shay felt the ghost tendrils of Graham’s hand still entwined with hers. She was too giddy over the simple way he’d held her hand.

“You can let loose.” Barney tossed his carry-on to the floor, reaching for the complimentary champagne.

“I perform. Raise money for a good cause. You set up a meeting with the label about my new album.” Shay pointed a finger at him, and Barney looked shocked.

Barney held his hands up in mock surrender. “Of course, baby, of course.”

An airline attendant opened the door. He smiled at Shay and Barney before bowing slightly to Graham. In a panicked tone he said, “We have a problem.”

“I knew it,” Graham rasped.

“What is it?” Shay asked, but Graham placed a hand on her shoulder, forcing her back.

“I have this, princess. Just wait.”

Shay didn’t have a chance to argue because Graham crossed the room in two strides, exiting with the attendant.

“Make sure you keep your eye on the prize, Shay,” Barney grunted as he collapsed onto the couch.

“What?”

Barney gulped his champagne. “You are at the peak of your career. Don’t change too drastically and cause everything we’ve worked for to come crashing down. You know how you were before, and we don’t want to go back there, do we? I’ll let you do this, but no more.”

Shay frowned. “Things change, Barney.”

“I’ve been in this industry for thirty years. When you want to change things too much, I’ve seen what can happen. I’m trying to save you.”

“I don’t need to be saved. You work for me, and if I want things to change, then you need to be behind me.”

Barney grunted as the door of the lounge opened and Graham returned with a grim expression.

“What’s wrong?” Shay said.

“The plane didn’t pass inspection. The landing gear is malfunctioning. They need to send for a part, but it will be at least four days.”

Her mouth dropped. “The concert is in two days.”

“The next available plane arrives on the day of the concert. We can get you out immediately in the morning,” the flight attendant offered.

“I won’t have time to practice at least once. How about a commercial flight?” Shay asked.

Graham scowled. “Never.”

“How about a bus?”

“Too last-minute, expensive, and wasteful for the three of us.” Barney shook his head.

Great, no plane and I have to bail on the concert.

“We can drive,” Shay suggested.

Graham’s eyes widened. “Drive? That’s a long haul.”

“It’s faster than waiting for a plane.”

“I don’t do car trips or commercial flights. You can drive ahead of me, and I’ll meet you there on the next flight,” Barney said.

Shay was going to prove Barney wrong. She would do this concert. Shop her songs. Change her career.
