It physically pains me to call Lang, who answers too chirpily. “My good man, Iskander, how are you this morning? I heard you fucked up, and everyone is pissed at you. Are you calling to ask for help?”

“Don’t gloat.” I almost growl.

“Oh, but this is just perfect. You wanting my help… And most importantly, I got a front seat to witness the groveling.”

“There won’t be any, I just need you to look for her.”

“Sure, you’re going to find her and do what exactly?”

His question settles all the gibberish in my head.

Honestly, I have no idea what I will say when I see her. I know she deserves to be happy, and maybe Luna Harbor isn’t the place for her.

All my life I’ve been thinking about how I’ll fix things for my family. That’s all I’ve been doing since my parents divorced, maybe even before that. Not once have I stopped to think about what anyone else wants, including me.

But what does Siobhan want?

Not once did I ever stop to ask her. I always decided what we’d do for the weekend or sometimes even what we ate. For such an independent woman, she not once protested my controlling personality. Why was that? Because she didn’t care or… There are so many unanswered questions.

“Listen, this is a moot point. Everyone thinks she needs them, but I think we both know they’re the ones who need reliable Siobhan,” Lang says with an almost mocking voice. “You’re right on letting her go and just moving on.”

None of what he says feels true. “There has to be a reason why she didn’t go back home,” I say. “It’s not like her to drop everything without telling her best friend or…”

“You?” He laughs. “I doubt she cares that much about you. We all warned her. She knew the score. It’s all cool, man.”

“Even so, I want to make sure she’s okay and well settled. Can you find her for me? I know it might take you a while to do it, but I’ll pay for your time.”

“Fine, but if you fuck things up, I’ll call in a favor… I know several hit men.”

“You’re an idiot.”

“Aww, look at you trying to get a favor and still insulting me. That’s why you’re not my favorite Cantú.”

“Lang!”

“Fine,” he growls. “I’m texting you an address. The private jet is ready for you. A car will be waiting for you when you land in Chicago, and it’ll take you to where she is.”

“You already found her.”

“Yeah, let’s go with that story.”

I can’t contain my voice and explode. “You knew and let us all—”

“Listen, I’m like a priest but cooler. I know everyone’s secrets, but I don’t say a word. If you need me, I’ll be on standby.”

“Do I need you?”

“I have the feeling that we’ll be speaking a lot.”

ChapterTwenty-Three

Iskander

My day is packedwith meetings, but like I’ve been doing for the past three years, I delegate.

During the flight, I keep thinking about Siobhan and wondering why she suddenly moved back to Chicago. I recall the moment when I found the pregnancy tests. They were for Nydia, she said, but were they for her?

I can’t fathom the idea of becoming a parent.
