“Is everything okay?”

She nods. “Yeah, but we might want to move her to Oregon, where the neurologist lives.”

“Why?”

“They have a hospital and are better equipped.”

“But I thought no one could leave.”

She nods. “It wouldn’t be immediately. I just want you to think about it, okay.”

“Do you think she’s going to wake up?”

“We’ll do our best.”

“Is that the doctor speaking?”

“Yeah, sorry. I can’t promise anything. It’s not that I don’t believe, but when you work in the emergency room, you learn to keep the expectations low.”

“You like to prove people wrong, Anya. Show them what you can do,” I plead, but there’s no answer.

ChapterThirty-Nine

Iskander

The future is always uncertain.

No one can say they know exactly what theirs will look like because life and destiny just don’t care about plans at all. They change the tapestry of our lives every single second.

However, while we wait for news, I make a few adjustments to my company. It’s not easy to buy properties online, but I’m lucky tohave great people under my command to help me with everything I need to do outside of Luna Harbor.

Once things are back to normal, Siobhan and Mitchell—who happens to be Anya’s next of kin—make the hardest decision in the world. They move Anya to Oregon. They have more resources there for her.

I promise her we’ll go and visit often. Rumi stays with Mitchell. The state of Washington gives him temporary custody, but they’ll keep an eye on him. We still help him with her care.

Until he has full custody of his daughter, he can’t travel with her. Once the state grants it, he’ll either go to Oregon so Rumi is close to Anya or Colorado.

Whatever happens, we’ll be there to support him. He’s becoming part of the family, and everyone, including Abuelo and Pa, accept him. Soon, he’ll move into a new house.

It’s close enough to us so we can help him with Rumi, and almost next door to Fisher and Nathalie. I’m pretty sure Rumi and Keaghan will have plenty of playdates. Keagh is pretty protective of her.

Around eight o’clock, there’s a knock on the door. Of course, whoever is behind doesn’t wait for me to answer it.

“Hey, asshole.” Manelik, who arrived a few days ago, waltzes inside. “You clean up well.”

“Why are you here?”

“Lang sent me a message. Everything is ready and she’s about to land.” He glances over at me. “I can’t believe you’re doing this.”

“Why not?”

“You never went steady with anyone—well, except Siobhan.” He snickers. “Not that it counts since you were in denial.”

“Shut up!”

He laughs. “Lang is right. It’s fun to ruffle your feathers. Why didn’t I notice that?”

“Are you done?”
