Prologue

Carter

Two months ago…

“Did you seal the deal or not?” I ask my brother, Cody, as we make our way to the car. This hadn’t been the plan for tonight, but he sure as hell looks like he enjoyed himself.

“A gentleman never tells.” The sly grin on his face says he did.

“You are far from a fucking gentleman.” I laugh.

“Still not telling.” He holds his hands up. “Toss me the keys.”

Tonight is a celebration. After a stint in rehab, Cody is out and sober. That’s why when he insisted that we meet the guys at one of the local clubs, I couldn’t say no. He was amped to see them, to have a taste of the life that should be his. So, I gave in. Having had my eye on him all night, I have to say I was proud of how he withstood the temptation and kept his sobriety.

The hot little number that had been all over him helped, too. I would much rather him drown himself in pussy than whatever his current drug of choice is.

He catches the keys with ease, a subtle reminder of everything his drug use cost him. Like playing in the NFL with me.

Getting in the car, my eyes focused on the screen of my phone and the stupid pictures that my teammate Green was posting. He’s such an idiot. I have no clue how Coach Masterson hasn’t kicked his ass yet.

The engine roars to life, and we’re off, headed home to finish off our brotherly weekend.

The car accelerates, and my eyes glance up from the video I had been watching.

“Slow down, man.”

When I look at Cody, there’s a wicked smile on his face and a glazed look in his eyes. How had I not noticed it before?

Fuck.

I knew this was a bad idea, I knew the temptation would be too much. He had insisted though. After everything he had been through, how was I supposed to say no?

Furious, I begin to shout at him. “You’re fucking high, aren’t you?”

“Lighten up.”

Lighten up? That’s his response? The guy who fucking blew his entire life to shit over drugs, the one who just got out of rehab is telling me to lighten up.

“Pull the fuck over. I’m calling for an Uber.”

“I’m fine, you pussy. Relax.”

I pull up the app on my phone to request an Uber. Only, I’m not exactly sure where we are. Cody’s driving too fast to see much of anything.

“Pull over!”

“Fine. Whatever.”

I breathe a sigh of relief until I realize that Cody hit the accelerator, not the brake. The car veers to the side of the road, a tree directly in our path.

“Brake. Brake. Fucking brake, Cody.”

My eyes shut.

Sounds fill my head.

Screeching tires.
