Metal crunching.
Then, silence.
My eyes flutter open. Trying to figure out what just happened, I glance around. The windshield is shattered, glass everywhere.
Cody is passed out in the driver's seat.
He’s high. We crashed head on into the tree.
“Cody, wake up,” I shout. He stirs but doesn’t wake. “Wake up, asshole.”
At least I know he’s alive. Though I swear to God I’m going to kill him for this.
I go to reach for him to shake him, but my armhurts so fucking bad, I cry out in pain.
“Carter? What’s wrong?” Cody asks as he finally wakes.
I look at him and can see a few scratches on his head, but he seems okay.
“My arm, my fucking arm is killing me. Shit.”
Sirens sound in the distance, drawing closer with each moment. Help is on the way.
Help that will include police. Police who will see that Cody is high as a fucking kite, something I should have noticed sooner, and haul him off to jail.
My parents don’t deserve that. They’ve been through enough because of him. And now, because of me and my inability to say no to the guy I have looked up to for the better part of my life.
For that reason, for them, I do something I absolutely don’t want to do.
“Move,” I tell him.
“Huh?”
“Move.” This time my voice is louder, angrier.
“I can’t.” He tugs on the seat belt.
“Figure it out,” I demand. I begin to panic as I hear the sirens nearing.
Finally freeing himself, Cody gets out of the car and stands beside the driver's side door. As he watches, I maneuver myself to the driver's seat.
“I was driving.”
“But…”
“Damn it, Cody, if anyone finds out you were driving, you’ll go to jail. I don’t want Mom and Dad to go through that. I was driving, got it?”
Cody’s been in too much trouble and doesn’t have the connections I do. No, it’s better this way. I might get some bad press, maybe be benched a few games, but it’s still better than my parents having to visit Cody in prison.
He nods. “You were driving.”
I was driving.
I crashed the car.
Cody destroyed my future.
