“I still can’t believe you had it in you?” Cody laughs. “Sex in public man? You’re smarter than that.”

“Maybe, but Lexie knows how to push all my buttons.” The woman will be my undoing, which is fine by me. If only I can get her to talk to me again.

“So, Lexie had this idea, and I think I’m going to run with it, but I’m going to need your help.”

“You know I’ll do whatever I can for you,” Cody replies. “I can talk to Lexie, apologize. See if maybe I can make her understand…”

I shake my head. “No, that’s not it. That’s not why she left.”

“You’re in love with her, aren’t you?”

“Yep,” I run my hand through my hair. “Fuck. She’s the last person I should have feelings for, but I have never felt this way about anyone.”

“For what it’s worth, I hope things work out.”

“Me, too.”

“So, what’s this genius idea she came up with?” Cody asks.

I start telling him about the sports league for disabled children and the variety of programs I want to implement. I’m going to need someone with his sports knowledge to help me. Hopefully, I can convince Lexie to help, too. After all, it was her idea.

We’re unpacking some things and getting him settled in his room when a stern-looking woman walks in.

“It’s time for you to go, Mr. Wallace. Just because you’re friends with Landon doesn’t mean you or your brother get special permissions. We have a program to run here, and all participants must follow the rules.” She stands in the door, the look on her face encouraging me to leave.

“Can we have a minute, alone, to say goodbye?”

She looks at me harshly before nodding her head and leaving the room.

“Looks like this is it.”

“Thank you for this. For all of it…” Cody scrubs his hand over his face. “Forgiving me and—”

“I haven’t forgiven you yet. You get clean, for good this time, then we’re cool. Got it?”

“I won’t let you down.”

Between the sound in his voice and the look in his eye, I know he won’t.

Chapter24

Lexie

“You have to see this,” Abbie says as she runs into my bedroom.

I’ve holed myself up in here ever since I returned from Brantwood. With the press outside my door, I opted to hide in my room and drown my sorrows in wine and Oreos.

She thrusts her phone toward me.

Pulling the covers over my head, I tell her, “I don’t want to see anymore memes or videos.”

“You want to see this one.” She yanks the covers off me. “I promise.”

Taking the phone, I press the play button on the video.

“My name is Lena and I’m a friend of Carter Wallace. I’m also the woman with him in the video that’s been circulating. As much as I hate having to admit this, I couldn’t allow Lexie Masterson’s name to be dragged through the mud anymore. It wasn’t fair that she pays for what I did.”

The video continues on with some bullshit about her dating Carter on and off for years, some sort of friends with benefits relationship, but I stop listening.
