I’m off the hook. By some miracle, I’m off the hook.

Rumors will be rumors, but with this woman stepping forward, there’s nothing substantial to tie me to the video anymore.

“I can’t believe this. Why would someone admit to that when it’s a lie?”

Abbie looks at me and laughs. “They wouldn’t. I swear, sometimes I wonder how you had the better grades. He paid her. He did this for you.”

The man I have spent the past week avoiding just saved my life.

Abbie rushes out of the room at the sound of a knock at our door.

“Well, hey there, handsome,” she greets whoever is standing there… loudly.

Slowly, I make my way to the living room. Carter looks as handsome as ever and completely put together while I’m a disheveled mess.

“I saw. Thank you.”

His shoulders sag. “I thought you would be happier.”

“I am. I’m thrilled.”

“Then what is this? Why are you being so standoffish?”

“I’m not.”

He cocks his head to the side. “I talked to your dad.”

“I’m sure that went well,” I say, finally pulling out of the hold he has on me. Moving to the window, I look at the quiet street below, and relief washes over me when I don’t see media lining the street.

“He tried to give me another therapist. I turned him down. Told him I’d only work with you.”

“Considering he hasn’t called, I’m pretty sure he denied your wishes.”

“Doesn’t mean I have to listen.”

“Actually, Carter, it does. You’re under contract and required to—”
