Snow Bird was stirring a stew when Margaret came up to her one day. "That Banks character is acting awfully funny. Something's in the wind."

"I think he and Rose had a fight." Snow Bird glanced at the young man who kept staring at Kat and Rose.

"Oh, how come you think that?"

"Saw her lay with him, then she got up, naked and walked away from him."

"That's not good." Margaret shook her head. "I'll talk to Rose and see what's going on then."

"Be careful." Snow Bird warned her.

"Don't fret, I carry a knife with me, just in case of things like this." Margaret chuckled and showed her the knife in her pocket.

Snow Bird smiled. "You are a smart woman."

"Have to be if you want to stay alive out here." Margaret chuckled.

That afternoon Margaret came back to the stove. "Well, I talked to her. She did lay with him, until she found out how twisted he was."

"Twisted?"

"Yeah," Margaret's face contorted into a frown. "He laid with his family. And he boasted of it too. Rose didn't cotton to that, believe it or not. Said it was indecent."

Snow Bird's eyes rounded.

"Rose didn't like the way he bragged about it, to her. She left, and he got mad."

"She could be in trouble. He seemed angry with her the other night when she walked away."

"Yeah, we'll have to keep our eyes open." Margaret warned her. "I think that young man is headed for trouble."

Two nights later, he had Rose pinned on the back porch, she had gone out there to clean up, and was washing herself when she saw him at the door. "I'm washing." She explained.

"I can see that," He came through the door now and stared at her. She was holding on to her gown at the waist as she washed her underarms and breasts. She immediately raised it to her chin.

"Please give me some privacy." She told him.

"I'm gonna give you more than that you little tramp."

She backed up. He had a knife in his hand and he aimed to use it on her. He snarled at her. "Why'd you walk off like that, the other night?"

"You are an evil man." Rose declared loudly. "Even I know you don't sleep with your family. And of the ones I know that do, they don't brag about it."

"Shut up. You'll wake the others." He came closer, his grip on the knife much tighter now.

"Good."

"I ought to kill you, you little bitch. You're just a Negress, that's all. Trash. So, don't go judgin' me…"

She tried to go back into the other room, but he wouldn't let her pass.

She started backing up again, he came closer, and raised the knife into the air. She gripped the wall with her hands. Her breathing was sporadic, sweat pepper her forehead, her voice was no longer steady. "They'll hang you sure…"

"Not for the likes of you they won't." He snickered.

He had her against the inside wall now and he was leering over her. He took the knife and brought it against her throat. "Now you little black devil, I'll teach you who is the boss." He said lowly. "You're gonna lay with me, alright. Me and only me, from now on."

"Leave her alone," Matt Younger stood a few feet away by the inside door. He had a pistol aimed at Banks.
