"Another time," he whispered to Rose as he let her go.

Rose scrambled away and went inside. He turned to face Matt, "It was none of your business."

"I know, but I'm making it my business. Now go to bed, and you try that again, you'll hang. I can promise that."

"Hang? For her? She just a damn Negress." Joe yelled.

"She's a human being. Now go to bed and think about what I said." Matt told him.

Joe stared long and hard at Matt. "I haven't interfered in your affairs. You got a pretty little Injun wife, I wonder if I should turn my attention on her now?"

"I wouldn't if I were you," Ferg said.

Ferg heard the commotion and came out to see what was going on.

"Trouble?"

"No, Mr. Banks was just going to bed." Matt told Ferg.

Joe moved to go inside, they stepped aside.

When they were sure he was gone, Ferg turned to Matt.

"What happened?" Ferg wanted to know.

"He tried to kill or hurt Rose."

"Wonder why?" Ferg asked.

"Snow Bird said Rose rejected him." Matt told him.

"Well, I'll be damned. Good for her. Glad you put a stop to it. Killin' a female is lower than a skunk in my books."

"Yeah, I don't like hangings." Matt smiled. "But I'm not sure it's over yet either. He's thinking with a lot of hatred."

Ferg threw an arm around his shoulder, "If he knows what's good for him, he'll stop."

"I hope so, but he mentioned Snow Bird and that worries me."

"Don't worry, little buddy, we'll all watch out for her. You can bet on it." Ferg nodded.

Matt went to bed, but Snow Bird was still awake. "What happened?" she asked as he laid down beside her.

"He tried to hurt Rose."

"Oh, did you stop him?"

"Yes, he's gone to bed now. I don't know for how long. He seems bent on hurting someone all the time. The man's got a lot of hate inside him."

"I do not think he will stop until she is dead. Margaret said Rose didn't want to be with him because he was bragging about having relations with his mother and sisters."

Matt pulled her close. "Yeah, he seems to have no morals at all. And yet he calls everyone else trash. I don't like him or trust him. But, don't you fret, me and the boys will keep a sharp eye on that one."

She cuddled up to him, "The baby is active tonight. I cannot sleep."

Matt pulled his shirt off, "Maybe he needs some settling down…" He grinned. He ran his hand up her dress and massaged her there. He felt the baby kick and smiled down at her, "He is active. 'Sometimes I wonder how you do sleep with all that going on. Maybe he has his days and nights mixed up."

She scooted closer, "You are always so gentle with me." she said as she wrapped her arms around him. "I think maybe the baby loves you as much as I do."
