Ferg smiled, "We'll work this out. You'll see."

"I hope so, because the baby will come in late spring, early summer. I want to have a place for us." Matt told him, as he glanced proudly at Snow Bird now. He couldn't take his eyes from her. Standing by the stove, silhouetting her baby, she looked lovelier than any woman he'd ever seen. Yet, her real beauty came from within, with the kind of person she was.

"Don't you fret. Once we get the land grant, we'll help you build a place. That's a promise."

"I wouldn't know how to thank you. I don't have any money. I couldn't pay you for your labor."

"Don't need money, just shelter every now and then. And maybe when we get too old to climb the mountains any mo

re, we'll stay, if that's alright with the two of you."

"That'd be great, I could sure use the help getting the place in shape."

"We can cut the timber for a house. Make it big enough so when we come, we got a place to lay our heads. Maybe we won't come up here anymore either."

"You can have that, any time." Matt smiled.

Ferg looked at him and smiled. "Remember something son. Open your house and your heart to anyone son, but don't put your gun up, as you never know when you might need it."

Matt chuckled.

Chapter Seventeen

When the snows began to thaw, everyone was anxious to get outside, even if just for a bit. The birds were humming in the trees now, the sun was shining every day, and spring was near.

Hunting was easier, and meat abounded in the new Smokehouse.

Snow Bird was nearing the end of her pregnancy and she was feeling very good about the baby.

"I can hardly wait, but I want to have a place for us to live too." Matt told her. "I want to build you a home."

"I am used to living outside, it does not bother me." She smiled taking his hands in hers.

He stared into her sparkling brown eyes, "I've got to ask this now. It's not that I want to, but I promised you."

Her smile began to fade, she knew what he was going to ask.

"Do you want to go back to your people?" He asked.

She moved to a window and stared out at a robin sitting on a low-lying branch. Her face contorted from a frown to a gentle smile now. She turned to look at him.

"I cannot deny that I miss my sister, but…I know that going back now, with the baby, would only cause trouble, maybe even for her. He would never accept the child as his own, and he has children from Naomi. He loves my sister. I do not love him. I love you…very much. The answer is no…I do not wish to go home now, maybe never. I want to make a life with you my husband, a family."

Matt couldn't stop himself from smiling at her response. "And I love you very much too. I was almost afraid to ask you, but I promised I would. Perhaps later, we can visit them, but since the baby is coming soon, and he will be so young, it is not a good time to go. But later, in the future, if you still want to go, to see your sister, I'll take you. I promise you that."

She nodded, as she reached to hold him by the arms. "I'm glad you said that. I'm glad you're confident in my feelings for you. I love you as my husband, and I do not want or seek another. But more than that…. that you can love the baby as your own, is more than I dared to ask. You make me very happy."

He took her in his arms and kissed her lightly on the cheek, "We'll make a good family, you and me. I promise you that."

She turned toward him presenting her sensuous lips as an offering. He stared longingly, she waited, her heart throbbing with anticipation. His warm, moist kiss sent an immediate thrill through her. His tongue slowly, meticulously licked the outer edges of her lips. Desire speared through her body like a wayward bolt of lightning. The delicious sensations of his kiss made her hunger for more. She swooned and clutched him tighter. When they pulled apart, they were panting.

His lips left hers to explore the delicate curve of her ear, as he let out a long sigh his breath sent new expectations through her. She shivered with delight as he whispered the words she wanted to hear. "I want you so bad right now, but I don't want to hurt the baby." He told her. "But tonight, I want to hold you close, look at you and maybe I can still please you without hurting the baby." He winked.

She pinked. "I will look forward then to tonight." She chuckled.

He ran a loving hand over the baby and smiled. "Good, me too." The look in his eyes sizzled.

He distracted himself from her by cleaning his gun. It wasn't an easy distraction. Wanting a woman at the most unpredictable times caused a man to lose himself to the moment.
