"It is of no importance. You will be his wife, you have earned it. The whole tribe embraces you. Including me. He never looked upon me, like I did him."

"But you love him too… don't you."

Little Feather bowed her head, "I cannot speak of such things."

"I understand. He is a great man. It is not wrong to love him. But, can you go on now and find a husband for yourself?"

Little Feather blushed, "I did not know you knew."

"He knows too. He thinks the world of you, but in a different way, then you might expect. He wants you to be happy. Had I not agreed to marry him, he would have chosen you. I feel guilty, for I have caused you pain."

"It was not to be. I was not in his vision. It is not your fault that he only has eyes for you."

"There has to be a man for you somewhere, you are too good to be alone… "

"You are generous and kind with your thoughts of me, but it is you he loves… "

"I will pray that you meet someone… " Hannah told her.

"You would pray for me?" Little Feather stared with a puzzled look.

"Yes, do you mind?"

Little Feather considered her words. "No… I do not."

Hannah smiled. "I will be so glad when I can get up from here. My back is still sore, and moving around still hurts, but I feel stiff and need to move around."

"They say you did not even cry out when they used the burning knives. I could not help, I could not stand to see anyone in such pain."

"Pain is something I have learned to endure. I had no choice in the matter. But now that I look upon it, I believe my life was meant to be this way. Had I not endured pain throughout my life, I would never have been able to stand it. I would have died. Instead, I live."

"I have never seen anyone braver… they say your white husband did this?"

"Yes, all of it… " she admitted.

"Is he dead now?"

"Yes, by the hands of wolves, Lone Wolf said."

"It is good that he cannot hurt anyone else. And I am glad Lone Wolf did not kill him too."

"Yes, so am I."

"Did you love him?"

"My white husband"

"Yes."

"No, I never did." Hannah sighed. "But like the Indians, he paid two horses for me to my parents. I had no choice but to go with him. He married me that same day. But in four years I still could not learn to love him."

"Rest now, I will let you sleep, and thank you for your prayers. I am glad Lone Wolf chose you instead of Luki, she was wicked and ugly. He is wise. I will be happy for you now. And it is good that we talked. We will be like sisters now."

Hannah nodded with a smile.

Black Feather was with her during the day and Lone Wolf visited during the night, but there was no privacy and her pain kept her from moving about and talking much.

"You did tell me Liam is dead, didn't you?" Hannah asked that next night.
