"I know… but she seeks to bring us trouble."

"She will not. She has no power to do that. Hannah you are so strong, so wise, and yet you let her scare you. She is nothing… "

"She is like the serpent in the bible."

"Yes, she is. And would I love a serpent?"

She chuckled, "You try to make me laugh."

"I love the sound of your laughter." He smiled and kissed her softly.

"I will be strong and brave for you. It's my back, I know it looks bad. On a man, it would be a proud thing, on a woman, it is shameful."

He seemed to consider her words. "The way people look sometimes reflects how they have lived. When I look at your back, I do not see ugly, I do not see imperfections, I see a woman that I love that has been through hell and back and is still as sweet as a newborn baby. I am not like your white husband Hannah, I see you for who and what you are, and I love who and what you are. We are one, and no one can change that, not even a serpent."

"You are the nicest man I've ever known." She whispered.

"Good. I am preparing a beautiful flute that I will play for you each day before the wedding. It will be beautiful love songs."

"A flute?" she asked suddenly smiling and very pleased.

"Yes, I am very good with a flute."

"Will you play for me now, so I may sleep. For she has upset me so much, I fear I cannot sleep."

"I will, I'll be back." He went to get the flute.

When he returned he played her a lovely Indian love song and she closed her eyes and went to sleep.

Before he left he looked down on her, "I love only you, my sweet Hannah. But I might ring Luki's neck if she keeps bothering you. Your back… is part of what I love about you. In time you'll understand this."

Chapter Twenty-One

"Hannah, this is my cousin, Red Hawk, he has come to be at our wedding!" Lone Wolf proclaimed as he walked inside Little Feather's tipi to introduce them.

Hannah was finally up and about and surprised by Lone Wolf's relative.

"I am happy to meet any of Lone Wolf's family," she told him, shaking hands with him and smiling into his handsome face. She turned abruptly to Little Feather,

"And this is Little Feather our friend."

Red Hawk came u

p to Little Feather and stared at her bent head. "I'm pleased to meet you Little Feather."

She raised her dark eyes to him and was amused at his lighter brown hair and eyes. "I am glad also to meet you."

Red Hawk turned to Hannah now.

"We have heard much of your bravery and I had to come and meet you, as Lone Wolf has finally picked a wife. I was beginning to think he never would."

Hannah smiled shyly.

Red Hawk was an inch or two taller than Lone Wolf, not as muscled as Lone Wolf, but very handsome. His hair was lighter too, indicating he might be a breed too, Hannah thought to herself. It wasn't completely straight either, that gave it away. He smiled a lot and she liked that about him.

"Did you come far?"

"Yes, I live in the north country."
