“Why does Thane’s family have so much money, anyway?” I asked, looking up at the ceiling full of skylights. The aqua blue of the sky shows through the glass, and I almost feel like I’m outside. This room would be beautiful under a starry sky, and I imagine Fox and I lying on the floor, gazing up as the starlight is distorted by the window.

“Thane’s parents are doctors. Bigwigs in cervus research.”

I inhale so sharply that I choke. After a minute of sputtering and coughing, I’m able to speak again. “They are cervologists?”

“Oh, yeah. Probably the most famous ones in the field. Thane was a cervologist too for a few years. But he works in endocrinology now. It suits him better.” A tightening around his eyes indicates that there’s more to the story than that.

Oh, God. He’ll be able to recognize my cervus symptoms as soon as one arises. I really don’t have a chance of hiding it if it comes to that.

As if on cue, my shoulder jerks. Dammit. What terrible timing for damaged nerve tissue to decide to fucking spasm.

Usually, I only get them when I am really, really tired, or having other symptoms, like major fatigue, fevers, or nausea. Fox frowns at me, so I blurt out, “Shoulder spasm. I’m fine. Just from leaning over the laptop too much, I guess.”

He nods with sympathy. “I’ve had those, too. I can teach you some good stretches if you need them. I dislocated my shoulder mid-season about three years back.”

It’s such a casual offer that I want to cry. I wish it was only something that could be fixed with a few stretches. “I’ll remember that. But back to Thane. So, he wanted to follow in his parents’ footsteps?”

“Not really. You know how overbearing Alpha parents can be. They wanted their kid to carry on the legacy, to keep their name going. Never mind that the guy wanted to be a chef.” He narrows his silver eyes at me. “That’s a secret. Don’t tell anyone, or you’ll never taste his cooking again.”

“I won’t. But he would’ve been a good chef.” I think of the gnocchi. It was one of the best meals I’ve ever had.

“He still could be, if he took his head out of his ass.” Fox shakes his head, his dirty blond hair falling into his face. “But he thinks he’s already so far into the medical career path that he can’t change.” He rubs at his temple and glances away from me. “We’ve all got our secrets.”

That’s an understatement of the most extreme kind. I feel guilty keeping my own secret from them, but it’s not something I can just bring up in everyday conversation.

Hey guys, thanks for letting me stay here, I’d love to be your Omega, by the way, I’m dying.

They would kick me to the curb so fast I wouldn’t know what hit me. But, if I do find the right pack for me, I will tell them right away. They deserve that honesty. They deserve the opportunity to turn me down before bonding me.

Maybe there’s a pack that takes in cervus-stricken Omegas on the regular, like how some people adopt senior dogs. They know the end is coming, so they want to spoil their new family member until that end arrives.

It’s a pretty thought, but that’s all it is. No one would be crazy enough to willingly bond to a dying Omega.

I sense Fox is through with the conversation about Thane, likely knowing he shouldn’t talk about him without him present, or at least his permission to discuss personal things with me. We fall into an easy silence, watching polar bears track a path over a snowy landscape on the TV.

I lick my lips, going back to the reason I came out here to talk to him. “You’re sure I can’t just slip you a few hundred dollars? You can give it to Miles to use as needed and—”

“Riley, chill. You wanting to pay for shit in a house full of Alphas is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. It’s ourjobto take care of our Omega. We would never ask you for any money.”

“I’m not yours,” I blurt, my voice lacking any conviction. “I’m not your Omega.”

To my surprise, sadness flashes across his normally flippant expression, but he quickly schools it away. He leans in close enough that I can feel his warm breath against my ear. “You could be, if you really wanted.”

He’s so close to me now. I could just turn my head, and his lips would be right there against my own.

“Riley,” he murmurs in a sing-song voice. “Is there something you want?”

I stare at his plump lips that look positively edible. “I… I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?” He moves closer, and his lips graze across mine, barely touching. “Maybe we should find out.”

I let out a humiliating whine, deep in my throat, and the next thing I know, his mouth is against mine. It’s warm and firm and perfect, everything I dreamed my first real kiss would be like since I don’t count the ones my parents’ friend stole from my mouth.

His tongue swipes at the seam of my lips, and I let him in, my belly clenching at the feel of his tongue dancing with mine. His hard body presses against me, his chest against my breasts, and I whine again, begging for more, all my nerve endings on fire. An ache forming low in my belly, making my thighs press tight together to trap the feeling. Keep it there forever.

My core grows wet with slick, soaking through my panties. Fox must scent it because he growls and moves his lips to my throat while his hands slide between my legs. He rubs against the seam of my jeans in small, teasing circles, and I grind against him, trying to chase that perfect sensation and not quite succeeding.

“Fox,” I mumble, unsure of what I’m even begging for. “Please.”
