Kadon explains that they have criminal records. Jake has a record of domestic violence and armed robbery. Wayne has some petty theft on his record and assault. Jake did four years for the armed robbery charge and Wayne did three for the assault charge. They were both released two years ago.
Ava added that they were both in the foster system together when they were younger. That seems to be how they met. They were both fostered by John and Macy Buckley from Fort Wayne, Indiana. The foster mother is still living. I am going to fly out to talk with her this afternoon. I should be back tomorrow night.
Terry added that there has been a trail of similar unsolved robberies from Fort Wayne to Los Vegas including a few in Houston, Scottsdale, and Aspen that all started about three months after both men were released from prison. There have been no real suspects, and no one had been arrested.
“So, are we all thinking the same thing?” Bryan asked. “That these two guys are the same guys you have been looking for Connors?”
“I think so,” Wyatt replied and everyone else including myself agreed.
“I will inform Captain Shepherd about all this new information. The thing is we can’t arrest them on our suspicion. We are going to need evidence,” I tell them.
“Agreed,” Ava replied. “Let’s get a plan together.”
CHAPTERSEVEN
Emma
The only good thing about this ordeal is when Detective Blair Connors walked into this conference room. My god that man is gorgeous! And then he sat down beside me. I swear I stopped breathing. Looking into his eyes I was mesmerized. Why couldn’t I date him, or a man like him. Not only was he gorgeous and kind, but he would also never hit a woman, or at least I don’t think he would. I don’t know if I can trust my own judgement on men anymore.
I can’t believe what I am hearing. The things that I didn’t know about Wayne. I should have let Ava run a background check on him months ago when she asked me if I wanted her to. He’s been in prison for assault no less and Jake for domestic violence. The type of men I should be running from full force due to my past. How had I missed the signs? How could I have been so blind and so stupid?
And then my phone pings and it is Wayne. What do I do? I look at Ava, and she must have seen it written on my face because she said, “You have to text him back Emma like nothing is wrong. You can’t let on that you know who he is and what he is up to.”
“Honestly, I don’t know what to say. You know my past. I am literally scared now,” I say.
After saying that the room got quiet. Blair turns to look at me.
Ava said, “It’s up to you if you say anything or not. What did his text say?”
“He just asked his normal question of how my day was,” I said.
“Okay, reply like you normally do,” Ava replied.
I text Wayne back and told him that my day was good. How was his?
My phone pinged back immediately that his day was good as well and how about dinner Friday?
“He wants to know if I will have dinner with him Friday night. But before I respond I need to explain my past,” I said.
I feel my eyes start to water up and Caroline who is sitting on the other side of me lays her hand on my arm. Everyone is still quite and looking at me. I know I can trust all of them, even Caroline and Wolf. So, I tell them about my abusive ex. While I am talking, I feel Blair tense up beside me and I couldn’t look at him. I felt so ashamed. Ashamed that I let it happen the first time, but even more ashamed that I am in a relationship with another violent man.
“I am so sorry, Emma,” Caroline said.
“We all are,” Wyatt said. “And I promise you that we will all do whatever we can to keep you safe from Wayne and Jake.”
“Thank you. I really appreciate that,” I replied. “I will text Wayne back that I will have dinner with him Friday.”
“In a public place. No more dates to his house,” Blair said in a stern tone.
“Okay,” I replied. Then I text Wayne back and asked about us having dinner at the PTB Grande. He responded back that was fine, and he would see me there at 8 pm.
“We are having dinner at 8 pm Friday night at the PTB Grande,” I tell everyone.
“Let’s start making plans,” Wyatt said.
“I am texting Grayson now. I think Wolf and Caroline can move into the mansion with us and we can make sure the security staff is on high alert and Wolf can be there for backup if I need it,” Ava said. “Would that be okay with you two?”
“Well, I have never stayed in a mansion!” Caroline said as she touched her husband on the arm.
