“What?”

He reached out and wiped the corner of her mouth with his thumb. “You have juice everywhere.”

Her stomach turned over and tightened at his touch, and every cell in her body suddenly seemed to reach toward him.

“So do you,” she managed to say.

He examined his stained fingers and smiled ruefully. “So I do.”

“White was really not the best colour for this job.”

“My shirt is spotless.”

“Is it?”

He saw the flash of mischief in her eyes a moment too late and couldn’t step back in time to stop her smearing a handful of blackberries down the front of his shirt. She trailed her hand right down his chest to his firm flat stomach as he looked down at himself in incredulous horror.

“I can’t believe you did that!”

“Can’t you?” she teased.

He laughed despite himself, and his mouth finally pulled into a grin. “What am I talking about? Of course I can believe it. But can you—” he took a berry from her basket “—believe this?”

She stood still and scowled at him as he dotted the berry on the tip of her nose.

He laughed—actuallylaughed. “Such a cute button nose. You just need some mouse ears…”

Pretending to glare, she grabbed another handful of berries and reached up to crush them into his hair. He was so tall she had to go on her tiptoes, a hand on his shoulder for support. But he grabbed her wrist before she could reach her target and held her there until she half fell into him.

The look in his eyes made her feel far warmer than the sun had.

“Let’s not waste them,” he said in something lower than his usual voice.

“I’m not.” She moved the hand he was holding to her mouth and pressed her berry slicked fingers to her lips. “Taste them. They’re delicious.”

His eyes followed her fingers, got lost on her lips. His expression was pure heat and his chest rose sharply. But other than that, he did not move.

So Pea rose up on again on her tiptoes, her other hand still on his shoulder for support, and, breath stopping, pressed her lips to his.

A million sensations rushed through her and all of them were good. All of them were hungry, and insistent. She let her body press up flush against his, and every place they touched cried out for more. She kissed him and he—

He did not move.

And then—

He did.

Chapter ten

Leo

Peony’smouth.Shetastedlike blackberries and sin. It was fucking delightful.

Hetriednot to kiss her. He tried so hard, with every argument he had. But he had craved this woman for half his life. And he was, it turned out, only a man.

Something bitter and raw shuddered free of him as he gave in. He cupped Peony’s face in his hands and kissed her with his whole soul.

She melted into him with a soft noise that sent his pulse raging. His hands moved into her hair—finally, finally, he got to feel those soft silk curls—then his right hand was running down her back, over the curve of her backside, dragging up the hem of her dress and slipping under her underwear, cupping the bare skin of her arse and dragging her firm against his front. And it was his turn to make a noise, low in his throat, something like a growl, because she was driving him fucking insane.
