“Hungry, Reese?” Christian asks with a smirk.

“Something like that.”I was awake most of the night watching your daughter sleep soundly after I made her come so hard she pretty much passed out.

“You’re hanging,” Oak points out helpfully, studying me harder than I’d like him to.

“And what? You don’t exactly look fresh this morning,” I shoot back.

“Where’d you go?”

“I came back here after you made it more than obvious I wasn’t welcome at the Chapel.”

Tension crackles between us as we glare at each other across the table.

He still blames me, and rightly so. I’m more than aware whose fault all this shit is. I just wish he’d ask fewer fucking questions. He already wants to hurt me. If he were to find out…

“You got wasted alone in your room?”

“What about it?” I hiss, getting really fucking bored of his insinuations that are hitting a little too close to home.

“Oakley,” Christian warns, shaking his head as if he’s bored of his son’s antics. “Can we please just have one meal together that doesn’t descend into an argument? You two used to be so close. I know things have been… strained.” I scoff at that assessment but allow him to continue. “You need to remember what brought you together and put all this behind you.”

“We’ll see what we can do,” Oakley mutters, willing to at least attempt to follow his father’s orders.

“So, aside from the obvious, what’s happening with you all? How has school been this week?”

We all mumble some variation of ‘it’s okay’, while Mum rolls her eyes at our lack of enthusiasm.

“Olivia, I’ve already spoken to Mr. Porter and informed him that you’ll be spending this week recuperating from your ordeal.”

“What?” Olivia screeches, her knife and fork clattering to the table as she releases them in shock.

“It’s okay, sweetheart. He more than understood and thought that it was the right thing to do, given the circumstances.”

“The right thing… given the circumstances,” she echoes in disbelief. “That’s bullshit. I’m going to school tomorrow.”

“No, sweetheart. I think your father is ri—”

“You’re not going to school, Liv,” Oak agrees, talking right over my mother.

“You can’t stop me from continuing my life. I’m not some poor, innocent victim here.”

“They’re right,” I parrot, unable to argue with them.

She’s still covered in cuts and bruises, the evidence of that monster’s touch glaringly obvious. It’s going to turn all eyes on her, and I don’t want that for her. For her to have to tell the story over and over, or worse, hear the bullshit lies I’m sure have already been made up after we all bolted from our own party. The rest of the team kept things moving, but our absence was noticed the second we all walked away.

“You’re not serious?” she asks.

“Deadly.” My deep voice perfectly conveys how seriously I’m taking this.

Olivia’s eyes narrow on mine. But I refuse to back down.

Well, not until Oakley’s confused stare makes my face burn red-hot.

“I mean, imagine what shit Darcie has been blabbing about you. You don’t want to be dealing with that yet.”

“Careful, Reese. You’re meant to like her, remember,” she seethes.

“Yeah,” I hiss. “I think our happy couple time might just be coming to an end.”
