“You’re seeing Darcie Porter? I didn’t realise it was serious,” Mum asks, clearly oblivious to the alibi I used to get away with sending Dale fucking Starling’s car to kingdom come.

“No. She was a means to an end.”

“And she’s got plenty of detailed stories about your ‘end’.”

A growl rumbles deep in my throat as Olivia stares at me in an attempt to show the rest of the room that her words mean nothing.

I see it, though. The hurt that flickers through her eyes, the jealousy that tightens her muscles as she even thinks about some of the bullshit Darcie has been spewing about me.

“Reese, you shouldn’t use people like that,” Mum chastises.

My chin drops at her audacity. “Are you actually shitting me right now?”

Her lips part in shock, but she wisely shuts the hell up when she realises what a hypocrite she is.

Oakley remains silent opposite me, studying me, making me squirm with the intensity of it.

“You want to come out on a double date with me Thursday night?” he asks out of nowhere.

“Uh…”

“It’s Misty’s birthday, and I promised to make it up to her—”

“Don’t wanna know, Bro,” Olivia barks.

Oak rolls his eyes. “A night out. Jeez, Liv. What do you think of me?”

“There’s no thinking, Oak. You’re a dog, and we all know it.”

“Okay, that’s enough, kids,” Christian says with a pained laugh. “No arguing and no discussing things that will make Fiona and I have nightmares about our babies.”

“Because you were better when you were our age,” Oak scoffs.

“Oh, he wasn’t,” Mum helpfully adds with a wide, mischievous smile.

“Overshare,” Olivia mutters.

“Anyway. Me, you, Darcie, and Misty, Thursday night, yeah?”

“Why the fuck do you want to double date with Darcie?” I bark, unable to fight the shiver that rips down my spine as I think about being forced near the leech.

“It’ll be like old times,” Oak says with a wink.

Images of the things our past double dates with the Heir chasers at school have entailed flick through my mind, making me even less interested.

My eyes shoot to Olivia as she sits silently, waiting for my answer, and the second my skin heats with her brother’s attention once more, I know there’s only one I can give.

“Sure, why not.”

Turning to look at Oak, I force a fake excited smile on my lips, but not before I see the way Olivia’s entire body jolts in shock.

“I’m more than happy to be your wingman, if you need the help to get laid.”

“Reese,” Christian barks as tension thickens the air.

A plate rattling across the table hits my ears, but I don’t look away from Oak. I can’t. He’s suspicious, I can see it in his rich brown depths that look alarmingly like his sister’s.

“Excuse me, I’m going back to bed,” Olivia says, standing from her chair. “I need to rest so I’m ready for school in the morning.”
