"I quit," Camden quips.

"Yeah, I'll go walk on water instead. Seems easier."

"Seriously. I can't mess it up, and I want to see everything."

I tilt my head. That doesn't make sense to me. "See what?"

He was talking about a wedding toast a second ago.

Nate flashes me his pearly whites, his expression positively wolfish. "Oh, I'm not ruining the surprise. You'll know soon enough."

That sound ominous, but he's delighted, and Camden doesn't seem concerned.

I guess I'll see.

ChapterSixty-Nine

After the amount of food I've ingested over the last two days, it's a miracle I can eat a morsel, but I manage, because the feast is incredible.

I can't even name half of the dishes, or recognize what I'm served, but the gray mousse, purple slices, and whatever those bits of meat were? So good. Thankfully the portions are small, so I get to try a bit of everything.

I focus on the food to ignore the company. I wish I were seated with Rhys and Roman, who seem to have been stuck at the "kids' table," which only includes teenagers. Then again, maybe not. Kim's with them.

Camden and I are at a table closer to the newlyweds. We're guests of honor, I guess—or rather, the Hunts are.

I can handle Adrian Hunt. He is rather imperious, curt, and disturbingly handsome, but he's never been anything but kind to me the one time we interacted at the hospital. I certainly can deal with Valentina. She's lovely, and has been so very kind to me.She even complimented her own jewelry on me. But being surrounded by Adrian, Valentina, andAddison Hunt is one step too far.

The rest of the table—reserved for the Aldens, according to the place cards—is vacant. No doubt they heard who they were sharing the meal with and ran away screaming.

Every word out of anyone's mouth around the table seems to be a pointed insult, aimed with cruel precision. If I didn't know better, I'd think they all hate each other. I know Camden likes his grandmother and his dad, but he doesn't act like he does right now.

"So, how's the new toy, Addison? I hear he gives fabulous massages," Adrian Hunt pokes his wife.

Are they still married? If so, why?

Camden snorts. "Jealous, Dad?"

Adrian practically chokes on his glass of champagne as he laughs. "Of a man who has to deal withher? I think not."

I clear my throat. "The food is really delicious."

All eyes around the table fall of me, and I regret my instinct to defuse the tension after it puts me under the scrutiny of three sharks.

Make that four. Camden absolutely is one of them right now, too.

"I don't suppose you're used to this," Addison says lightly.

Camden gets up, his chair scraping behind him as he leans forward toward his mother's side of the table. "Oh, no, you don't. Notoneword."

Someone get me out of here.

"Chill." Addison rolls her eyes. "I was poor once, too. Well, not super poor, but you know."

"Then you fucked my son," Valentina chirps. "And fucked him over."

I lean toward Camden as he sits back down. "If your familyeverdoes Thanksgiving? Count me out."

He chuckles. "Yeah, we stopped that years ago."
