But he does.

In all his actions and most of his words—unless I’m naked and at his mercy. He doesn't show much restraint then—he’s said as much in a lot of different ways.

I don’t know why it only hits me now. His consistency, the reinforcement of his attention. He’s been screaming at me, and I was deaf to it all because…why?

For the same reason I believed no one would think to look for me for a while. And just like that, I know it’s a bald-faced lie.

Camden won’t think I disappeared without a word. He’ll check. He’s frantically looking for me right this moment. I believe that. I am as certain of it as I am of my own name.

“Men like him don’t pay attention to women they don’t care about," the dick tells me. "They just fuck them and leave them. He’s taking care of you, so you’re his lover or his baby mama. Either way, you’re the perfect lesson.”

“You’re right,” I find myself saying. “He loves me."

And there it is. Three words that feel like absolute truth.

"He’ll come after me, and if you touch me? I pity you for what you’ll have to endure at his hands.”

I see the backhand coming, but I don't expect its force. After punching my face, he kicks my stomach so hard I fold in two, sputtering, the wind completely knocked out of my lungs.I'm coughing up, bent in half, and the hits keep coming. My legs, my back, my stomach. I bring my arms to my face to protect it, crying as I endure more pain than I've ever felt.

He hurls insults at me as he hits me."Stupid fucking bitch! You think you're so special, huh? You're nothing. Just a useless fucking whore! Your mother sucked off half of Thorn Hills. And you're just like her. Sucking rich dicks doesn't make you any better."

I drop down to the ground, keeping my head low, between my knees, to keep whatever part of me I can safe from his blows, until I pass out.

ChapterSeventy-Six

I look for her immediately when I can't find her in the bathroom. She was barely standing on her feet; it makes no sense that she wouldn't be here.

I'm not alarmed right away. We have several friends who could have commandeered her attention for whatever reason. I did just leave most of them in the playground, so I'm uneasy as I call her phone. It rings in her purse, next to her dress, of course. Next, I try Dimitri. He wasn't drinking with Rhys and Rom—he tolerates my friends for my sake, but we aren't his usual crowd. He's likely upstairs, with the thirty-plus age group.

"Missing me already?"

"Is Morgan with you?" I press, trying to temper the urgency in my voice.

It still slips through. Disappearing isn't like her. She can be a bit of a brat, but she isn't reckless.

"You lost your princess already? You should put a ring on it. A traceable one."

His words trigger something at the back of my mind.

Traceable.

"Let me know if you see her."

"Is there a problem?" he checks, sounding far less amused.

"I don't know yet. She's gone from the bathroom. I only left for five minutes."

Dimitri's silent on the other end of the line, then he says, "I'll scan surveillance."

He hangs up, never one to linger after making his point.

I get started on my idea, though it seems like a bit of an overreaction.

She might have just popped out for some air. She'll be back in a few. Right?

I scream.
