I can't see clearly through my stupid-ass uncontrollable tears, but I think I recognize that voice. "Dimitri?"

It makes no sense that Dimitri would be here.

"I'm here," he says soothingly, bringing his expensive jacket to my shoulders.

There are more footsteps and shadows. I wipe my face with the back of his sleeve without thinking."Sorry. I'm getting your expensive suit dirty."

There are three men dressed in dark, simple suits—they hold themselves in the way military guys do in movies, looking at every angle all at once. Bodyguards? Enforcers? Either way, they're clearly with Dimitri.

"I don't give a shit about the suit, Morgan." He kneels next to me. "Where are you hurt? Can you stand?"

I have no idea if I can stand. I try, and find that my legs are now the consistency of Jell-O.

Dimitri puts his arms under my shoulders and helps me up gently.

"How did you find me?"

"The bracelet." He touches the diamond and sapphire piece at my wrist. "That parure is worth enough that the Hunts had a tracker placed in each piece. Camden had you traced. I made it first, since I took the chopper."

I try to laugh, and fuck, it hurts. My ribs better not be fucked up again. "You came in a helicopter?"

"Yeah. We had to put it down far enough away your assailant wouldn't hear it, but it beats driving through Manhattan, even at this time."

He helps me walk, but I still stumble. Dimitri scoops me up and carries me out of the site. I fall asleep before we reach our destination.

Too bad. I would have liked to experience a helicopter ride.

ChapterSeventy-Eight

I wake up hooked into an IV, which is becoming a habit. I don't think I'm in a hospital this time, because the room's far too beautiful. The wallpaper is blue and silver, with light gray curtains billowing at an open window.

I turn to the left side of the black four-poster bed and find Camden, sitting up but asleep, like he's been watching over me until he crashed.

The moment I stir, his eyes blink open.

"Good morning."I have no clue what time it is, but it's light outside.

"Good morning, she says," Camden grates, his voice still rough from sleep. "Like you didn't give me a heart attack last night. Never again, Morgan. Is that understood?"

I scoff and regret it. I'm not in too much pain, which makes it clear some of the stuff going through my veins must be painkillers, but laughing isn't fun. "Like I asked some psycho to kidnap me." I frown, the events of the previous evening rushing back. "Kim—"

"Is being dealt with."

His tone is so dark, I dread to ask howexactly. But I have to know. "Did you get her arrested?"

Camden's hand strokes my hair back. "That's not our way, princess. The law wouldn't do much against her for her involvement. She'd get imprisoned in a cushy prison for a few months at most and buy her way to parole."

"So what, then?"

He looks down at me, weighing my strength, deciding whether I can hear what he has to say. "She was given to an underground club. A far cry from the Heritage, and not remotely legal. She’s going to be used for next year, in every way a human can be used by another one.”

That’s…a lot. “What will her family say? Aren’t they as powerful as yours?”

“They’re my family, too, technically," Camden reminds me. "And they know. They agreed to the decision. Kim agreed too."

I can't believe it. "What?"

"They allpreferredit to thealternative."
