He should have done his homework. He would have known DimitriVolkov, the man at the head of the largest organized network in the country, is a Heritage member, and a family friend.

"The men were told to bring her here, not to hurt her," Alexei assures me. "I'm truly sorry things went south. They didn't expect she'd have protection. The other girl came as a surprise."

This time, I actually think he's telling the truth. Toni came as a surprise to me too. I didn't go too deep in my research about the roommates, so I didn't know Toni was Antonella Rossi, a mob princess. I have little to no connection to that family—the Italians like to keep things closed off, valuing blood over most other concerns—which is one of the many reasons I had to get Morgan out of LA.

"Yeah?" Rhys snorts. "So, you're saying your guy kicked her ribs when she was already on the floor, what, in self-defense? We've seen the footage from the street camera, asshole."

Alexei's nostrils flare. "When things don't go well, people act rashly."

"They're in the wrong business if they can't handle two girls without losing their cool," Roman chimes in.

I've heard enough excuses, and I'm not here for a chat. I'm here to make a point."Bring them to me," I say slowly. "All three of them. They're mine now."

He knows as much. I don't doubt one of Dimitri's goons informed him of the magnitude of his fuckup.

Alexei's Adam apple wobbles. "You can't demand a blood debt if she wasn't officially yours. They didn't know."

I tilt my head. "Do I seem concerned by anything out of your mouth?"

Alexei's gaze flies past me to his men, who stare at him, trying to see what their boss is made of.

He knows he's about to lose every shred of authority he ever held unless he makes it appear like he's somehow in charge.

The only problem is he isn't.I am.

I could take the Scorpions tonight if I so wish. They're lucky I have my hands full, and a distaste for petty crimes.

"West, Ren, Frost," Alexei calls.

Three men detach themselves from the crowd and come forward. All of them are pretty banged up—black eyes, bruises, and one of the guy's seriously limping. Toni meant business.

"Tell Mr. Hunt what your orders were."

"To bring the girl here, sir," the tallest thug grunts.

"Was she to be harmed?" Alexei asked pointedly.

The man's gaze goes to his feet as he grumbles, "You didn't say."

"Did you think I'd want her harmed, West?" he insists.

West shakes his head. "You wanted her upstairs with the other girls."

"So why did you throw her on the ground and kick her?" I ask, not looking at West, but the leaner, shorter, light-haired asshole I saw on the recording.

The snake licks his lips and shrugs.

That's what I thought. He did it because he likes it. I doubt it's the first time he’s taken the opportunity to hurt a woman.

I pull the concealed piece from against my chest, aim, then fire twice. West and the burly black man at his side howl as they fall forward, blood pooling out of the bullet holes in their knees.

I grin as they scream.

A dozen idiots reach for their weapons, but before they can even think to shoot, Alexei surges to his feet, placing himself between the angry mob and me. "Stand down. Down, you idiots! He's with the fuckingWolf."

Those who know what that means immediately drop or pocket their weapons. The others look like they want to jump me, but their own gang restrains them.

I ignore the chaos, focusing on the blond dick who put Morgan in the hospital. My finger twitches on the trigger, but I holster the gun and take out thesyringeI'm keeping in my wallet instead.
