I let her. It would have taken me ten minutes to get to the entrance.

By the time she and Camden walk back in the kitchen, I've only just managed to stand up.

"You look terrible." No one can fault Camden for a lack of honesty.

"Well, you look…" I grunt, because he's particularly gorgeous today. He's all in black, wearing a short-sleeve silky shirt and dark pants, barely concealing his evil side. "Not asGQready as usual." As far as insults go, that's incredibly lame, and a complete lie.

He chuckles as he approaches, and brings his arms to my waist, ever so gently. "Hello, princess," he whispers. "Happy Friday."

I shiver, for many reasons.

"Get a room, guys," Pauline teases.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of.

ChapterForty

I opted to take the Aston Martin today. The passenger seat's already set up to recline to a comfortable position, and I added pillows too.

Morgan stares at the seat, brows furrowed in confusion, like she can't quite comprehend why it's set up with her comfort in mind.

I used to think she couldn't wrap her head around the fact that I wanted her taken care of, but it goes deeper than that. I only started to understand this week. She just isn't used to being cared for. Her normal consists of parents happy to throw her to the wolves for their own satisfaction. That's the reason she didn't call me for help. It's not in her nature to expect anyone else to solve her problem.

"Why did you send me ten thousand dollars, Camden?" Morgan asks, eyes on the heap of pillows on her seat.

I don't answer immediately, arranging the pillows for her before offering her a hand and helping her down. I don't miss her wince as she bends.

I don't like seeing her in physical pain. That's good news, for her and for me. It never occurred to me that I should worry one way or another about my character, despite how many times Morgan, and others, called me a psycho. After yesterday, I'm not so sure.

I genuinely never thought of breaking bones, stabbing someone, or flaying the skin off a human being’s fingers for my entertainment. But alone down in my basement, with the piece of shit who hurt Morgan, I did all that and more. What's more concerning yet, I enjoyed it.

Ren's patched up and in Dimitri's custody now, but I remember the seconds where I considered just pushing the edge of the knife right into his heart and watching him bleed out. The main reason I didn't is because I wasn't sure what to do with the body. It's one thing to carry an unconscious guy from my car to my house—dragging a body out would be another.

I'm not sure what Dimitri has planned for him, and I don't care. I wanted him to suffer, and I saw to it for an entire night. The beast within me is sated.

Yet here I am, concerned because my princess made a face. I'm not a complete psychopath if I can care about her discomfort, right?

I get to my seat and start the car.

"Well?" she prompts.

Ah, the money.

Her eyebrows crease as she tries to work out my motivations.

We both know if I'd just paid off her balance to the Scorpions, she would have considered my part of the bargain complete. I paid her back for two reasons: first, because her bank balance was too pathetic for words—and still is, for that matter—and secondly, because I don't want her just beholden to me. I want hergrateful.

Saying so isn't likely to achieve my purpose, so I hedge."Wasn't that the deal? I said I'd pay what your mother owed them."

"Oh." She blinks, like that hadn'toccurred to her."Uh, thanks. I'll be able to pay back the loan."

I scowl. Someone ought to give young people finance lessons. "I wouldn't. Now you've taken it out, it affects your credit rating whatever you do. An instant repayment, that doesn't do anything to improve it. If you repay the loan on time on a monthly basis, it builds your credit, showing that you're reliable."

She grimaces. At first, I think it's her pain spiking again, but she says, "I hate paying them so much interest."

Shedidget a shitty rate. "You'll pay an early repayment fine almost as bad as the interest. You couldcancelthe loan, as it's been less than fourteen days, but my advice stands. Building your credit is worth it in the long run. Keep the loan for a year, repay it after."

"How do you know so much about finances? It's not like you’ve ever had to ask for a loan."
